Man, 25, Vanished and Survived 5 Days in Oregon Wilderness Before Being Rescued

A 25-year-old man, Gabriel Vaughn, has been rescued after a harrowing five days alone in the wilderness during a rafting excursion in Oregon. Vaughn was reported missing on 16 February when he separated from his group while navigating the Illinois River, near the Greenwall Rapids.

The situation unfolded when Vaughn, who had disagreements with his rafting companions, decided to exit the raft and swim to shore just after 4.15 p.m. His planned course was to hike towards the Chetco drainage, which lies within the remote Kalmiopsis Wilderness. According to his father, Henry Vaughn, the exact sequence of events following his disembarkation remains uncertain.

In response to Vaughn’s disappearance, the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office initiated a search operation, which was supported by the U.S. Coast Guard. Authorities quickly broadcast a missing person announcement to enlist public assistance in locating Vaughn. The matter was made even more pressing by the adverse weather conditions that had enveloped the area at that time.

Vaughn’s experience as a boater raised concerns among his family about his sudden disappearance. He is known to have tackled challenging waterways across the country and is familiar with navigating hazardous conditions. The Illinois River, notorious for its Class V rapids, poses significant risks to even the most seasoned adventurers. Interestingly, it was reported that Vaughn left a series of clues—paddle, helmet, and other equipment— at various locations, which proved invaluable to search teams.

On 20 February, search and rescue teams succeeded in pinpointing Vaughn’s location, approximately two miles downstream from his last known position. However, given his injuries suffered during the ordeal, authorities faced the challenge of safely evacuating him. Decision-makers from the Coast Guard opted for an aerial rescue using an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station North Bend.

Video footage released by the Coast Guard documented the dramatic moment Vaughn was hoisted from the wilderness, assisted by a rescue swimmer. The operation culminated in his immediate transfer to a hospital for urgent medical evaluation and treatment.

Following the successful rescue, updates from Vaughn’s family have been circulating on social media as well as a GoFundMe page created to support his recovery and assist with the costs incurred during the rescue operation. In a statement, his parents expressed their overwhelming joy at their son’s survival and acknowledged that his wilderness training and resilience played crucial roles in sustaining him throughout the ordeal.

While Henry and Jennifer Vaughn travelled from Tennessee to Oregon to coordinate search efforts and support their son, they reflected on the dedicated work of the rescue teams that ultimately saved his life. The statement concluded by acknowledging that while the search phase is over, Vaughn now faces a significant journey towards full recovery.
