Jessica Tagg’s life took a terrifying turn on Valentine’s Day 2018 when she woke up covered in hives after a routine outpatient surgery on her nose. The Dayton high school senior was left in agony, describing the sensation as akin to having poison ivy all over her body, multiplied by ten. Despite being discharged from the hospital, the hives soon returned, and Jessica found herself in a desperate situation, struggling to breathe and seeking emergency medical help repeatedly.

Doctors diagnosed Jessica with spontaneous urticaria and anaphylaxis, triggered by the pain medication containing opioids prescribed after her surgery. The hives persisted, along with angioedema, causing her throat and nasal passages to swell, making breathing a constant battle. Despite multiple hospital admissions and treatments with steroids, Jessica’s condition remained severe, with frequent ER visits over the next two months.
“I couldn’t panic because I knew it would only make things worse,” Jessica recalls, displaying remarkable resilience in the face of her debilitating condition. Determined to find a solution, she sought help from allergist and CSU specialist Dr. Jonathan Bernstein in Cincinnati. Dr. Bernstein diagnosed her with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), a challenging condition characterised by prolonged hives and swelling without a clear cause. Prescribing an injectable medication, he managed to bring Jessica’s symptoms under control, offering her a newfound sense of relief.
Living with the aftermath of her ordeal, Jessica remains cautious of her triggers, particularly heat, which exacerbates her symptoms. She diligently self-administers her injection every two weeks and has adapted her lifestyle to accommodate her new reality, focusing on indoor activities and maintaining a cool environment to manage her condition. While the impact of CSU lingers, Jessica’s determination to live fully and pursue her dreams remains unwavering.
Growing up in Dayton with a mother in dermatology and a father who is a military-clothing store manager, Jessica’s journey has been marked by resilience and bravery. Encouraged by a supportive family environment, she has always aspired to a career in healthcare and remains steadfast in her goal to work in women’s and reproductive health. Despite the challenges she has faced, Jessica’s story serves as an inspiring testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
As Jessica continues her journey towards healing and recovery, her story stands as a beacon of hope for others grappling with similar health challenges. By sharing her experiences and advocating for awareness around chronic illness, she embodies a spirit of perseverance and courage that inspires those around her. Jessica’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the power of resilience and determination in overcoming life’s most daunting obstacles.
