A woman who gained significant attention for her multitasking skills at a San Francisco Giants baseball game has come to the defence of her husband following a wave of online criticism. Ericka Alvarez, who was dubbed “mom of the year” in a viral video, responded after her partner, Ramses, faced backlash over their perceived unequal relationship.

The incident occurred during a game between the Giants and the Minnesota Twins on 22nd September. In footage shared by Barstool Sports, the 39-year-old Alvarez can be seen balancing their infant daughter, Anastasia, while also carrying food for the pair. Commentators Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper lauded her abilities, referring to her as the “definition of a multitasking mother”. However, their light-hearted jibes at Ramses sparked a storm of critique online.
In a Substack post published on 25th September, Alvarez felt compelled to clarify the situation, asserting that Ramses is an exceptional husband and father. She expressed her frustration over the judgement directed towards their relationship, stating, “A conversation the audience couldn’t hear became the basis for millions of judgments about that life.”
Alvarez explained that she and Ramses initially found the broadcast humorous, but soon realised that many viewers were taking the announcers’ comments as evidence of an unequal partnership. She elaborated on the day of the game, recounting how she had initially kept Anastasia while Ramses offered to help care for her during the fifth inning when she needed to use the restroom.
The mother also shared her experience ordering food during the game. She sent Ramses a photo of the menu, and he texted back, opting for whatever had the shortest line. Alvarez later returned with brisket sandwiches and loaded fries, emphasising how Ramses moved her jacket to make room for her, welcomed their baby with affection, and even asked her whether she wanted to eat first.
“I had eaten before we left for the game, and I knew he hadn’t had a full meal all day,” Alvarez revealed, explaining that despite his offers of assistance, she was content to hold her own food. She noted that Ramses even offered to feed her, but she encouraged him to enjoy his meal instead.
The response to the video, however, took a toll on Alvarez. She shared that she received distressing messages, which prompted emotional reactions. “I cried after reading some of the disturbing comments,” she admitted. Meanwhile, she praised Ramses for his resilience, labelling him her “greatest supporter” throughout the backlash.
“He’s our family’s rock,” she stated, underscoring that he remains unshaken by the negative feedback and knows the truth about their relationship. “It’s one of the reasons I married him.”
As the story continued to circulate, it sparked wider conversations about societal expectations of parenting and the dynamics within partnerships. Alvarez’s story serves as a reminder that perceptions based on short clips can often lack the full context of a relationship.
To date, the San Francisco Giants organisation has not issued a comment regarding the incident, nor have the announcers responded to the uproar. As public discourse around the viral clip evolves, Alvarez’s defense brings to light the harmful effects of judgment based on thin narratives, advocating for more understanding in how relationships and parenting roles are viewed in public life.
