Sherrone Moore, the former head coach of the University of Michigan Wolverines football team, found himself in jail on Wednesday, December 10, following allegations of assault. This incident occurred just hours after Moore was terminated from his coaching position by the university due to an investigation uncovering an inappropriate relationship he had engaged in with a staff member.
The Pittsfield Township Police Department took Moore into custody after responding to reports of an alleged assault. The City of Saline Police Department also played a role in locating and detaining Moore, who was then handed over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for further investigation. Subsequent statements from the authorities indicated that there was no lingering threat to the community as the suspect was placed under arrest and taken to the Washtenaw County Jail pending potential charges by the prosecutor.

While details of the incident remain limited at this time, the police confirmed that their investigation is ongoing, and further information will be disclosed as it unfolds. The swift developments unfolded following Moore’s official dismissal from his position at the University of Michigan, a move made on the grounds of a confirmed inappropriate relationship investigation. Warde Manuel, the University of Michigan Athletic Director, announced that Associate Coach Biff Poggi would step in as the interim head coach with immediate effect.

Previously, Poggi had assumed the interim role during Moore’s two-week suspension earlier in the season. Notably, Poggi led the team to victories over Central Michigan and Nebraska during his earlier stint as interim coach. Moore had faced prior suspensions for NCAA violations related to an illegal advanced scouting scheme involving former staff member Connor Stalions. Consequently, Moore was already scheduled to miss the opening game of the 2026 season due to a one-game suspension.
Moore’s coaching journey with Michigan began in 2018 as a tight end coach before later serving as the acting head coach during Jim Harbaugh’s suspensions in the 2023 season. He achieved success as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach during Michigan’s victory in the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship. Subsequently, Moore took on the role of head coach for the 2025 season following Harbaugh’s departure to the Los Angeles Chargers. Under Moore’s leadership, Michigan concluded the season with a 9-3 record.
As the team gears up for the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against the University of Texas Longhorns on December 31, Poggi will continue to guide the players. While the circumstances surrounding Moore’s detention are concerning, the athletic program at the University of Michigan remains committed to upholding integrity and excellence in its sporting endeavors. The community awaits further updates on the unfolding investigation and how it may impact the future of the football program at the esteemed university.
