A surgeon in Ohio has found himself in legal trouble after allegedly attempting to administer abortion pills to his girlfriend without her consent. Dr. Hassan-James Abbas, 32, has been indicted on six felony charges, including abduction, tampering with evidence, and unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug.
The State Medical Board of Ohio took swift action by issuing a notice of opportunity for a hearing and summarily suspending Abbas’ medical license on November 5. This comes following an investigation into the disturbing allegations against the doctor.

The case against Dr. Abbas stems from an incident in which he allegedly tried to give abortion pills to his pregnant girlfriend while she was asleep. The accusations include claims of illegal procurement of abortion medication and an attempt to force the pills on the woman without her knowledge or consent.
Abbas’ attorney, Kelle Saull, acknowledged the grand jury indictments and expressed relief that the criminal process is underway. The defense team remains open to further developments as the case progresses.
Both the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office and Abbas’ legal representatives have yet to respond to requests for comments regarding the allegations. The State Medical Board of Ohio stated that a hearing for Dr. Abbas is scheduled for May 2026, after which a final decision on his medical license will be made.

According to reports, the surgeon began a relationship with a former patient in late 2024 and, upon learning of her pregnancy, allegedly took matters into his own hands by obtaining and administering abortion medication without her consent. The victim claimed that Abbas forcefully administered the pills to her, leading to a confrontation and subsequent emergency room visit.
During a board interview, Abbas reportedly admitted to his actions but contended that the victim had consented to taking the pills. The medical board, however, concluded that the surgeon’s conduct posed a significant danger to the public, leading to the suspension of his license.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Dr. Hassan-James Abbas is set to be arraigned later this month. The case highlights the importance of upholding medical ethics and respecting individuals’ rights to make informed decisions about their healthcare.
This troubling incident serves as a reminder of the trust patients place in medical professionals and the serious consequences that can arise when that trust is breached. It also underscores the need for thorough investigations and swift disciplinary actions in cases of alleged misconduct within the healthcare industry.
As the case progresses, the outcome will not only impact Dr. Abbas’ career but also raise questions about the oversight and regulation of medical practices to ensure patient safety and ethical standards are upheld. The legal process will ultimately determine the accountability and consequences for the accused surgeon’s actions.
