King Charles and Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom recently had the honour of hosting Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Büdenbender, during a state visit to the UK. The visit began with a grand welcome ceremony at Windsor Castle, where both royal families came together to kick off the diplomatic event in style.

The official proceedings commenced after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, warmly greeted the German couple at Heathrow Airport in London. From there, a regal horse-drawn carriage procession made its way to Windsor Castle, where King Charles, 77, and Queen Camilla, 78, awaited to extend their warm greeting to President Steinmeier and First Lady Büdenbender at the Royal Dais on Datchet Road.

As a Royal Salute echoed through the Home Park in Windsor and also at the Tower of London, the royal entourage, along with the German guests, rode in a carriage procession to Windsor Castle. The King and President shared the Irish State Coach, while Queen Camilla and the first lady rode in the Australian State Coach. The Prince and Princess of Wales, aged 43, also took part in the procession, travelling in the Scottish State Coach.
With great pomp and circumstance, a Guard of Honour saluted in the Quadrangle of Windsor Castle, with the regimental Band playing the German and British national anthems. President Steinmeier, alongside King Charles, inspected the Guard of Honour, before joining Queen Camilla, Büdenbender, and the Prince and Princess of Wales to witness the military rank and march past.
During this formal occasion, Queen Camilla and Princess Kate were dressed in coordinated blue ensembles, reflecting their impeccable style and regal elegance. Queen Camilla donned a sapphire blue silk dress paired with a cashmere top-stitched coat by Anna Valentine, complemented by a striking feather hat by Philip Treacy. She accessorised with a historic sapphire and diamond brooch once owned by Queen Victoria. On the other hand, Princess Kate opted for British fashion, wearing a Burberry dress and a coat by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, accentuated with earrings previously owned by Princess Diana and the Prince of Wales Feathers Brooch.
Following the welcoming ceremonies, the royal family and their German guests convened for lunch in Windsor Castle’s Green Drawing Room, followed by a special viewing of German-related items from the Royal Collection. Later in the day, President Steinmeier engaged in meetings with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other political and business leaders at No. 10 Downing Street, while the first lady visited the Judith Kerr Primary School in southeast London, paying homage to the renowned German-born British writer and illustrator.
The evening concluded with a grand state banquet hosted by King Charles, Queen Camilla, and members of the royal family at Windsor Castle. Both King Charles and President Steinmeier delivered speeches to the distinguished guests, highlighting the significance of the state visit – the first of its kind by a president of the Federal Republic of Germany in 27 years. This historic event further solidifies the strong diplomatic ties between the UK and Germany.
In recent years, the British monarchy has played a crucial role in fostering international relations through such state visits, showcasing the nation’s rich history and traditions. The visit from Germany’s President Steinmeier adds to a series of high-profile visits this year, including French President Emmanuel Macron and former US President Donald Trump. These diplomatic engagements serve as a testament to the UK’s commitment to global partnerships and cooperation in an ever-changing world.
