Dr. Salvador Plasencia, the doctor who provided ketamine to the late Matthew Perry, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California confirmed on December 3rd that Plasencia, who had previously pleaded guilty to four counts of distributing ketamine, received his sentencing. Perry, the beloved star of Friends, tragically passed away in September 2023 due to an accidental overdose of ketamine. His lifeless body was found in a jacuzzi at his home in Pacific Palisades, California.

Following Perry’s untimely death, an alleged North Hollywood drug dealer known as the “Ketamine Queen” named Jasveen Sangha, along with Plasencia, were charged in connection with providing ketamine to Perry during his final days. The Department of Justice announced these charges on August 15. An autopsy report from PEOPLE revealed that Perry was injected with ketamine three times on the day he passed away. The overdose was deemed accidental, with contributing factors including drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine, a medication used in treating opioid addiction.

Struggling with depression and anxiety, Perry had sought ketamine therapy as a form of treatment. However, court documents obtained by PEOPLE indicate that Perry became addicted to the drug shortly before his death, injecting it multiple times a day. Prosecutors claimed that five individuals took advantage of Perry’s addiction, distributing ketamine to him in his final weeks. Each of these individuals has since pleaded guilty to charges related to Perry’s passing, with Sangha being specifically linked to causing Perry’s death through ketamine distribution.
Cooperating with federal prosecutors, individuals like Perry’s assistant Kenneth Iwamasa and Dr. Mark Chavez, among others, have accepted guilt for their involvement in distributing ketamine. Plasencia, in a text exchange with Chavez, referred to Perry as a “moron,” discussing the costs of the ketamine doses provided to the actor. The investigation into Perry’s death highlighted a network that capitalized on his addiction, resulting in devastating consequences.
This case sheds light on the dangers of addiction and the exploitation that can follow. The tragic loss of Matthew Perry serves as a sombre reminder of the complexities surrounding substance abuse and mental health. The sentencing of Dr. Salvador Plasencia and the guilty pleas from other individuals involved bring a semblance of justice to a heartbreaking situation. As the legal process unfolds, the memory of Matthew Perry lives on, highlighting the need for greater awareness and support for those battling addiction.
