Actress Millie Bobby Brown, known for her role as Eleven in the hit series “Stranger Things,” has grabbed headlines with her divisive costume choice for the upcoming Season 5. The now 21-year-old actress first portrayed Eleven at the age of 12 in the show’s debut season back in 2016.

According to the show’s costume designer, Amy Parris, Brown had reservations about the wardrobe selection for Eleven in the final season. Parris revealed in an interview with the New York Post that she foresaw the mixed reactions to the character’s outfit. The costume features Eleven sporting tiny red shorts over light grey sweatpants, paired with a cropped grey sweatshirt and a bandana around her neck.

Parris drew inspiration from iconic ’80s characters to create Eleven’s reinvented look for Season 5 of “Stranger Things.” She referenced Josh Brolin’s character in “The Goonies” and Punky Brewster, played by Soleil Moon Frye in the 1984 sitcom. Brolin’s character, Brand, famously rocked a similar style with workout clothes and layered shorts over sweatpants, which influenced Eleven’s ensemble.
Defending the unconventional fashion choices for Eleven, Parris explained that the character’s storyline in the show justified her unique style. With Eleven’s friend Max (played by Sadie Sink) in a coma, fashion was not a priority for the character. However, Eleven managed to make her outfits fashionable despite the circumstances, incorporating elements of style into her look.
Despite initial reservations from Brown about the costume, Parris mentioned that the actress eventually warmed up to the outfit, appreciating its comfort and unique appeal. The actress even joked during a fitting session, “I’m so glad I’m married!” referring to her husband Jake Bongiovi, whom she wed in 2024 and they adopted a baby girl in August 2025.
In early November, Brown and her fellow “Stranger Things” cast members commenced the press tour for the final season, sharing insights and experiences from their time on set. Brown expressed gratitude for the bond she formed with her colleagues throughout the show’s run, highlighting the sense of family that developed over the years.
The first four episodes of “Stranger Things” Season 5 are currently streaming on Netflix, with the next three episodes scheduled for release on Dec. 25, leading up to the finale on Dec. 31, 2025.
