The president and co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization, Raúl Rocha, has been charged by Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office for his alleged involvement in trafficking drugs, weapons, and fuel between Guatemala and Mexico. Mexican investigators claim to have discovered monetary contributions from Rocha to a criminal organization after conducting raids on several private residences, as reported by Mexican newspaper Reforma. The shocking news emerged shortly after the completion of the 2025 Miss Universe pageant, marred by various controversies and scandals.

According to Reforma, Rocha, a prominent Mexican businessman who also serves as a consul of Guatemala in Mexico, is suspected of being a key figure in a criminal syndicate that smuggles fuel via boats along the Usumacinta River and then transports it by trucks to Querétaro, Mexico. On August 6, a warrant for Rocha’s arrest was requested by Yazmín Mayoral Marín, an agent in Mexico’s Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime, on charges related to organized crime, drug trafficking, and arms dealing.

During their investigation, the Attorney General’s Office raided multiple properties and purportedly seized evidence of monetary transactions between Rocha and the criminal network, with one transaction amounting to 2.1 million pesos. The arrest warrant alleges that members of Rocha’s alleged syndicate have connections with politicians and authorities at various government levels to carry out illicit activities, including the sale of narcotics, hydrocarbons, and weapons of war.
In a bid to secure immunity from prosecution, Rocha reportedly approached the Attorney General’s Office in October to negotiate a plea deal in exchange for providing valuable information. However, neither Rocha nor representatives from the Miss Universe Organization have responded to requests for comment regarding these serious charges and developments.
The unfolding scandal surrounding Rocha adds to a series of controversies that have plagued the Miss Universe pageant in the lead-up to and aftermath of the 2025 edition. Prior to the pageant, a public dispute erupted between a contestant and a pageant executive, resulting in several beauty queens walking out of a pre-event gathering. Subsequent claims of misconduct, including judges dropping out and allegations of selective finalist choices, further tarnished the organization’s reputation.
Musician Omar Harfouch’s resignation from the judging panel just days before the pageant, citing irregularities in the selection process, raised further questions about the integrity of the competition. Harfouch alleged that certain contestants had inappropriate relationships with selection committee members, prompting him to step down after seeking transparency from Rocha, which was purportedly denied.
Rocha’s admission in a recent interview about his disillusionment and desire to offload the pageant organisation only adds to the turmoil surrounding Miss Universe. As the legal proceedings against him unfold and the fallout from the 2025 pageant continues, the future of the prestigious beauty competition remains uncertain amidst the barrage of scandals and controversies.
The Miss Universe pageant, once a symbol of grace and glamour, now finds itself entangled in a web of criminal allegations and internal strife, shaking the foundation of an institution that has long been a beacon of elegance and beauty on the world stage.
The unfolding narrative surrounding Rocha underscores the need for transparency and accountability within the pageantry world, as stakeholders and fans alike clamour for justice, integrity, and a return to the core values that define the essence of beauty competitions. As the legal proceedings progress and the truth gradually comes to light, the Miss Universe Organization faces a pivotal moment in its storied history, one that will undoubtedly shape its future trajectory and standing in the global spotlight.
