The Eden Prairie Police Department (EPPD) received reports of gunfire around 8:40 PM local time while the game was underway. Officers arrived promptly at the scene, where they found two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds in a parking lot adjacent to the school. Following the incident, the entire stadium was evacuated to ensure the safety of all attendees, including students, parents, and staff.

The EPPD’s investigation suggests that the shooting was targeted, although no suspects have been apprehended at this stage. The exact motives behind the shooting remain unclear, and authorities continue to gather information and conduct interviews as part of the ongoing investigation. A significant police presence was maintained at the scene to reassure the community following the troubling event.
In response to the shooting, a reunification site was established at nearby Round Lake Park to assist families and attendees in finding one another after the evacuation. This initiative allowed for a smooth and safe gathering point amidst the chaos. The prompt actions taken by first responders and the evacuation process were acknowledged by the school district, which praised the community’s cooperation during a distressing situation.
Eden Prairie Schools confirmed that the football game would resume on Saturday, 3 October, at 11 AM, demonstrating a commitment to returning to normalcy for students and staff. The EPPD has confirmed that school will continue as scheduled on Monday, 5 October, signalling to students that their education will not be disrupted in the face of adversity. Superintendent Dr. Josh Swanson expressed his pride in the community, remarking, “Tonight was a hard night for our community. A night that was meant to celebrate all that makes us Eagles was tarnished by the selfish and violent acts of a few.”
Governor Tim Walz also responded to the incident, expressing his thoughts on social media. He emphasised that gun violence should not overshadow community events such as homecoming games. “No homecoming, in any community, should be disrupted by gun violence,” he stated, while confirming that state officials were collaborating with local authorities to apprehend those responsible.
The shooting disrupted what was intended to be a celebratory evening for the students and athletes involved. As authorities continue their investigation, they encourage anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. The safety of the community remains a priority, and local police are committed to finding answers and ensuring such an incident does not occur again.
As the situation develops, the community of Eden Prairie is left grappling with the effects of the shooting. The local government and school officials are working to provide additional support for students and staff as they navigate the aftermath. “Our community took care of one another and our visitors, leading to an evacuation with zero injuries that was almost entirely complete within an hour,” Superintendent Swanson added, highlighting the importance of unity and support during challenging times.
In the coming days, as investigations continue and the community begins to heal, many will look towards fostering a safe environment for future events, ensuring that such a disturbing episode does not taint the spirit of their community celebrations.
