A grisly bear attack that left multiple students and a teacher injured during a school outing has sparked an urgent search in British Columbia. Conservation officers are currently on the lookout for a mother bear and her two cubs in the aftermath of the alarming incident which took place near the Four Mile subdivision of Bella Coola.

The attack occurred on Thursday, Nov. 20, catching a group of elementary school students and teachers off guard as they were having lunch along a trail. The mother bear, joined by her cubs, emerged from the trees and attacked without warning. Remarkably, three brave teachers intervened to shield the children. Despite one teacher using bear spray and another physically engaging with the bear, the attack resulted in injuries to three children and one adult.

Inspector Kevin Van Damme provided an update, confirming that three children were hospitalized, two with life-threatening injuries, and one adult was airlifted to Vancouver for further treatment. Seven additional individuals were treated locally for less severe injuries. The community of Bella Coola, particularly the Nuxalk Nation, where the attack occurred, is reeling from the incident described as highly unusual and deeply unsettling.

Authorities have commended the courageous actions of the staff members who risked their safety to protect the students during the attack. Conservation officers have since intensified their efforts to locate the bears, traversing challenging terrain in the valley in search of the sow and her cubs described as highly aggressive. The ongoing search is complicated by the imminent hibernation season for the bears, which could hinder efforts to capture them alive for DNA sampling.
