FDA Raises Concerns Over Cheese Recall

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently issued a significant warning regarding a cheese recall due to potential listeria contamination. The recall affects various pecorino Romano cheese products supplied by Abriola Company under brands like Boar’s Head and Locatelli. Brands such as Boar’s Head Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese, Locatelli Pecorino Romano Grated Cheese, as well as wedges of Boar’s Head Pecorino Romano Cheese are included in this recall.

The FDA highlighted that no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, but it is essential to be cautious due to the potential serious health consequences associated with listeria contamination. Listeriosis, caused by listeria infection, can lead to various symptoms such as headaches, fever, muscle aches, confusion, and diarrhea, posing a particular risk to individuals over 65, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems. Therefore, it is crucial to address the issue promptly.

On Monday, Nov. 24, Boar’s Head Brand’s supplier, Ambriola Company, initiated the recall of specific pecorino Romano cheese products following concerns of listeria contamination. The FDA categorised this recall as a Class 1 recall, indicating a high risk of serious adverse health effects or even death from exposure to the violative product. Authorities use different classes like Class I, II, or III to communicate the level of health hazard associated with the recalled products.

Affected products include 6-oz. packages of Boar’s Head Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese with “best by” dates between Nov. 21, 2025, and March 12, 2026, as well as 7-oz. wedges of Boar’s Head Pecorino Romano Cheese with “best by” dates ranging from Nov. 25, 2025, to May 11, 2026. Locatelli Pecorino Romano Grated Cheese, another product linked to the recall, carries the UPC 41793-82493 with all “sell by” dates included in the recall.

Moreover, Boar’s Head EverRoast Chicken Caesar Salad and Wraps, which utilise the recalled grated cheese and have a “best by” date between Nov. 9 and Nov. 22, are also part of the recall. While no illnesses have been reported so far, retailers like Big Y and Tops have been advised to withdraw the affected products from their shelves as a precautionary measure.

In response to the potential listeria contamination, Boar’s Head decided to recall all Ambriola Company-produced items, even though only the two grated cheese products were found to have the issue. This decision was made to ensure customer safety and prevent any possible health risks associated with the consumption of contaminated products. The recall has impacted grocery stores nationwide, urging consumers to check their purchased items for the specified UPC codes and “best by” dates to avoid health hazards.
