A horrifying incident unfolded in Bella Coola, British Columbia when a group of students and teachers were attacked by a grizzly bear while out for a walk. The vicious attack, which occurred on Thursday, Nov. 20, left two individuals in critical condition and several others injured. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported that at 1:46 p.m. local time, B.C. Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) received a distress call about an “animal attack” on a trail near Highway 20.

According to emergency officials, two people sustained critical injuries, while two others were seriously hurt. Additionally, seven more individuals were treated at the scene for injuries that did not necessitate hospitalization. Acwsalcta School, an independent school managed by the Nuxalk Nation, announced on Facebook that the school would remain closed on Friday, Nov. 21, following the tragic bear incident.

Expressing gratitude for their team and students, the school acknowledged the challenging circumstances in a social media post. Details regarding the ages of the victims remain unconfirmed, with authorities yet to ascertain if students and staff from the school were among those harmed during the brutal attack. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) issued a statement confirming the grizzly bear attack and indicated that several individuals may have been injured.

Urging public safety as their top priority, the BCCOS, along with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), directed residents to avoid the forested and river areas near the 4 Mile location until further notice. Confirming the severity of the victims’ injuries, North District RCMP Corporal Madonna Saunderson stated that the injuries sustained were grave. The Nuxalk Nation informed locals that the aggressive bear was still at large and advised residents to refrain from venturing outdoors.

One parent, Veronica Schooner, disclosed that her son, Alvarez, aged 10, was among the group attacked by the bear. She recounted the harrowing experience where her son was forced to run for his life, coming terrifyingly close to the bear. Schooner recounted the chaos that ensued during the attack, mentioning how a male teacher bore the brunt of the assault and was airlifted from the scene for medical attention.

Efforts to reach B.C. Emergency Health Services, North District RCMP, B.C. Conservation Officer Service, and Acwsalcta School for additional information were unavailing.
