Renowned actor Ethan Hawke recently divulged that he made a commitment to his children not to publicly address his divorce from Uma Thurman. In a candid interview with The Times in the UK, Hawke, known for his role in “Blue Moon,” reflected on the challenges of navigating a high-profile breakup, particularly 20 years after parting ways with Thurman.

Hawke, 55, spoke candidly about the complexities of divorce, stating, “The public eye is like gasoline, but what makes divorce hard is the stuff that makes it hard for everyone: the family elements, how to help the kids through it.” Expressing admiration for those who manage amicable separations, he revealed, “I’m so envious of people who have amicable splits. I can’t really talk about this because I vowed to my kids so many times not to talk about the divorce in public.”
The actor, a father of four, shares two children, Maya and Levon, with ex-wife Thurman. Reflecting on his own experience and observing relationships worldwide, Hawke commented, “If you get the privilege of traveling the world, you realize that everywhere men and women have a tremendous amount of difficulty staying married.”
Hawke and Thurman tied the knot in 1998, with Thurman filing for divorce in 2004. The former couple’s union produced two children, Maya, 27, and Levon, 23. Following his divorce from Thurman, Hawke found love again and married Ryan, with whom he shares two daughters, Clementine, 17, and Indiana, 14.
In his interview, Hawke shared a glimpse into his mindset post-divorce, revealing that initially, he was not keen on remarriage or expanding his family. However, meeting Ryan changed his perspective as he confessed, “When I split up, I was hellbent on not having any more kids and I wanted to be single for the rest of my life. But then I made a best friend and I liked kissing her.”
Finding solace in his work, his passion for theatre, and the presence of his children, Hawke navigated through a period of depression following the divorce. Reflecting on the aftermath, he shared, “I got divorced and my personal life fell apart. When you’re depressed, it’s really easy to see everything that is fake about other people and life, and I just started seeing all that. How phony celebrity was, how phony everything is.”
Thurman, who has seldom addressed the split publicly, emphasised the importance of maintaining peace for the sake of their family. In a rare comment back in 2006, she stated, “I cannot participate in anything critical about my children’s father. I just need to keep peace. I think it’s fair to say that I haven’t said one mean thing, and I’m not going to start now. It’s terrible for my family.”
As Hawke continues to navigate the complexities of relationships and family dynamics, his openness about his journey serves as a reminder of the challenges and growth that can stem from moments of upheaval and transformation in one’s personal life.
