In a tragic turn of events, the body of a 7-year-old girl who was swept out to sea along with her father has been discovered. The heart-wrenching incident took place at Garrapata State Park in California on November 14. The search for the missing child lasted several days before the grim discovery was made.
According to reports, a diver located the girl’s body approximately half a mile north of where she was engulfed by the waves at the park. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office revealed the findings in an update on Facebook, confirming the identity of the recovered body as that of the missing child. Despite initial reports identifying her as 5 years old, the girl’s name has not been disclosed at this time.

The tragedy unfolded when the father, 39-year-old Yuji Hu, courageously attempted to rescue his daughter from the treacherous waters. Tragically, he was unable to save himself and succumbed to the sea, losing his life in the hospital following the rescue operation. The mother of the girl also made efforts to save her daughter but was swept into the water. Thankfully, she managed to return to shore and is in stable condition after being treated for mild hypothermia. Additionally, a 2-year-old child present during the ordeal sustained injuries.
Search and rescue efforts involved various agencies including California State Parks, the U.S. Coast Guard, CAL FIRE, Monterey County Search and Rescue, and the California Highway Patrol. The extensive search operation commenced on November 14, with a temporary halt the following evening due to adverse weather conditions. The search resumed the next day, with additional aerial support from a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter deployed to aid in the efforts.
As the community grapples with the devastating outcome, the family has expressed gratitude towards all involved agencies, personnel, and community members for their unwavering support during the search and recovery mission. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office conveyed the family’s appreciation while also respecting their privacy, as they request time to come to terms with their loss.
The tragic incident underscores the importance of beach safety, particularly as the National Weather Service had issued a warning about hazardous beach conditions around the time of the incident. Vigilance and caution are paramount, especially when faced with unpredictable elements like strong waves, to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate event. The community mourns the loss of a young life cut short, and support pours in for the grieving family as they navigate this profound tragedy. The relentless efforts of all involved in the search and recovery operations reflect the unity and compassion of the community in times of adversity.
