A black bear caused a stir at an ice skating rink in Lake Tahoe when it decided to take a spin on the freshly set up ice. The bear, locally known as Charlie, made an unexpected appearance at Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday, Nov. 6, much to the surprise of locals and employees. According to reports, the bear managed to sneak onto the ice shortly after the rink had been prepared for the season.

The incident was captured in a photograph shared on Facebook by the mall, with a caption that humorously read, “🐻⛸ BREAKING NEWS: Looks like someone bearly read the ‘no skating without skates’ sign this morning!” The image showed the bear on the ice, giving the impression that the winter sports season had officially begun at Heavenly Village. Dreu Murin, a spokesperson for the Shops at Heavenly Village, revealed that the bear, Charlie, was quick to take advantage of the fresh ice, leaving tracks as it explored the rink.
According to Murin, it is not uncommon to spot bears in the area, especially during late fall and early winter. Despite their presence, there have been no recent reports of bear attacks in the region. Charlie, the bear, who has become somewhat of a local celebrity, was seen strolling through the village on multiple occasions. This time, however, it seemed the bear was curious enough to try out ice skating, spending around 10 minutes on the rink before eventually wandering off.
While the bear returned later, it refrained from going back on the ice, sparking ideas of creating ‘Charlie the skating bear’ T-shirts to commemorate the playful encounter. The Tahoe Interagency Bear Team (TIBT) emphasized the importance of setting boundaries to protect both humans and bears in the area. Measures such as proper waste disposal, hazing bears away from populated areas, and avoiding feeding them human food are recommended to ensure peaceful coexistence with these powerful wild creatures.
Urban Wildlife Biologist Rebecca Carniello with the Nevada Department of Wildlife emphasised the need for respect towards black bears, highlighting their peaceful nature yet underscoring their wild instincts. The community’s encounter with Charlie serves as a reminder of the beauty and unpredictability of nature, prompting locals to appreciate and responsibly coexist with the wildlife around them. Fashioned as a local celebrity, Charlie’s brief ice skating escapade brought a touch of whimsy and excitement to Heavenly Village, creating a memory that will likely be cherished by residents and visitors alike.
