Karl Marsh, diagnosed with cancer in May 2024, and his fiancée, Sarah Wooley, exchanged vows on Sunday, November 9th with the help of the staff at Katharine House Hospice (KHH) in the U.K. The quick turnaround was prompted by Marsh’s deteriorating health, leading the couple to advance their wedding plans. The couple had initially planned to marry on November 22nd, but circumstances called for an expedited celebration.
Wooley shared, “We should have done it years ago. One evening we just looked at each other and said, ‘Shall we get married?’ — and that was that!” Their love story, beginning in 2010 and rekindled in Christmas 2022, culminated in a beautiful ceremony accentuated by the determination and love that bind them together.

The dedicated staff at KHH transformed their Therapy & Wellbeing Center into a picturesque wedding venue, complete with elegant decorations and a white-carpeted aisle. Reverend David Clark, the volunteer chaplain, worked swiftly to secure a special wedding license for the couple, emphasising the joy he felt officiating their union amidst such poignant circumstances.

The community also rallied around the couple, with local businesses contributing to make the day even more special. Head Over Heels Venue Dressing provided decorations, Sainsbury’s Stafford donated food and a wedding cake, and KHH’s catering staff ensured a delightful wedding breakfast for the newlyweds and their guests.
The bride, radiant in a beaded gown, and the groom, surrounded by love and support, exchanged vows and sealed their commitment with a kiss. Wooley expressed her gratitude towards the hospice staff, highlighting the unwavering care and compassion they extended to make their dream wedding a reality.
The couple’s special day serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact of love, resilience, and community support in the face of adversity. Hannah Fahy, the Head of Fundraising at KHH, acknowledged the generosity of the community that enables such moments of happiness in the midst of challenging circumstances.
In a world often fraught with challenges, the story of Karl and Sarah’s wedding shines as a beacon of hope and love prevailing against all odds. Their journey, marked by courage and unwavering devotion, is a testament to the power of love and the importance of cherishing every moment shared with those we hold dear.
