Divorce can be a challenging and emotionally draining journey for many individuals, but for Lindsay Hordal, it became a symbol of rebirth and empowerment. The social worker, who recently turned 43, decided to take a unique approach to healing from her “unhealthy” marriage by burning her wedding gown, ceremony photos, and marriage paperwork in a powerful photo shoot.

Inspired by the concept of “wreck the dress” posts she saw on Pinterest, Hordal saw burning her wedding items as a way to mark the end of a chapter in her life and embrace a new beginning. The act of setting her wedding dress and photos on fire symbolised her reclaiming her sense of self and inner light, which she felt had been dimmed by her past relationship.
Photographer Christine Genevieve, who captured the transformative moment, described witnessing Hordal’s emotional journey as a “metamorphosis” of self-growth. The photo shoot, which took place at Jamieson Creek in Kamloops, British Columbia, was filled with a mix of emotions, from anger and sadness to peace and relief. Through the lens of the camera, Genevieve could see Hordal’s personal growth and described the experience as akin to watching a phoenix being reborn.
Hordal’s decision to burn her wedding items came after a “long and arduous” divorce process that finalised earlier this year. Following less than two years of marriage, she realised the relationship was taking a toll on her emotional well-being. Drawing strength from the realization that she deserved better, Hordal made the brave decision to walk away and start afresh.
Despite the sadness and loss she experienced, Hordal found solace in rebuilding herself and moving forward in a positive direction. The photo shoot not only marked the end of a challenging chapter but also signified her resilience and strength in overcoming adversity. Hordal’s friends, who supported her throughout the divorce process, were proud of her decision to end the marriage and embark on a new journey of self-discovery.
Genevieve, who shared the powerful images on Instagram, received an overwhelming response from people around the world inspired by Hordal’s story. While some may view the act of burning wedding items as dark, both Hordal and Genevieve see it as a celebration of rebirth and growth. Through her experience, Hordal hopes to empower other women to prioritise their well-being and seek happiness and fulfillment in their lives.
As Hordal embraces her newfound sense of freedom and peace, she remains open to the possibility of love in the future, knowing that she is deserving of a healthy and supportive relationship. Her journey serves as a reminder that self-love and empowerment are key to healing from past traumas and moving towards a brighter tomorrow.
