A United Airlines flight attendant was found to be ten times over the legal alcohol limit while working on a transatlantic flight to London. Margit Lake, a 56-year-old flight attendant, was charged with performing an aviation function with alcohol ‘over the prescribed limit’, as confirmed by the U.K. Courts. This shocking incident was reported by the U.K.’s Metropolitan Police and has raised concerns about safety regulations within the airline industry.

According to reports, Lake consumed multiple miniature bottles of vodka during the 10-hour flight from San Francisco to London. Upon arrival at Heathrow Airport on October 17, she was taken to a local hospital due to exhibiting signs of high alcohol levels. Paramedics noted low blood pressure and detected alcohol on her breath, prompting further investigation into the situation. A blood test later revealed that Lake had 216 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 20 mg for flight attendants in the U.K.
During court proceedings, Lake’s attorney, Ben Lansbury, disclosed that she turned to alcohol in an attempt to ‘calm down’. He mentioned that the defendant was experiencing feelings of isolation, coping with grief, and was estranged from her family. Lansbury empathised with Lake’s situation, stating that she deeply regrets her actions and has been actively attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings since the incident. The court opted for a financial penalty rather than imprisonment, with Magistrate Tony Delliston asserting that Lake would not serve jail time but face monetary consequences.
The financial penalty imposed on Lake amounted to £1,461, along with a £584 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs, totaling over $2,700. Despite her 26-year tenure with the airline, Lake chose to resign from her position following the incident. Both London’s Heathrow Airport and United Airlines declined to provide comments on the matter, indicating the sensitivity and seriousness of the issue at hand.
