A fascinating video has recently emerged, capturing a rare sight of sucker fish enjoying a unique adventure on the backs of humpback whales. The footage depicts these fish, also known as remoras, feasting on the skin of the whales while hitching a ride across the ocean. The incredible video was captured by Olaf Meynecke, a researcher from the Whales and Climate Research Program at Griffith University in Australia, as part of a study on the migration patterns of humpback whales.

Meynecke’s cameras were strategically placed on the humpback whales as they traversed the migratory corridor known as the “humpback highway.” To his surprise, the footage revealed the presence of remoras clinging onto the whales’ bodies using their adhesive plates, while simultaneously feasting on the whale’s dead skin and sea lice. These fish live upside down, eating and reproducing on the gigantic aquatic mammals, creating what is believed to be a symbiotic relationship between the two species.

The video showed the remarkable agility of the sucker fish as they detached themselves from the whales just before breaching the surface of the water, only to quickly reattach themselves as the whales submerged again. Meynecke observed that the fish travelled in large groups, with up to 50 individuals clustering on a single whale. The researcher highlighted the fish’s remarkable responsiveness to the whales’ movements, suggesting a level of coordination and adaptation in their behaviour.

While the relationship between the sucker fish and humpback whales appears to be mutually beneficial, with the fish benefiting from a convenient mode of transportation and a readily available food source, Meynecke noted some intriguing behaviours displayed by the whales. He observed instances where the whales seemed to be attempting to rid themselves of the remoras, possibly indicating that not all interactions between the two species are entirely harmonious.
