Prince William, the Prince of Wales, made a heartwarming visit to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This marked the third day of his visit to the country. As he arrived at this renowned landmark, he was warmly greeted by the 2025 Earthshot Prize finalists, who are set to be honoured at an awards ceremony later the same day. However, amongst the distinguished group, Prince William received a special surprise – a chance to meet two-month-old Maria Beatriz.

The Duke of Cambridge, looking dapper in a blue blazer adorned with his Remembrance Day pin, took a moment to engage with the little one and her parents, Eduardo Cavaliere, the deputy mayor of Rio de Janeiro, and his wife, Victoria. Prince William enquired about Maria’s wellbeing, asking if she was sleeping soundly and admiring her gentle grip, all while holding her tiny hand. The interaction showcased his compassionate and paternal side, much to the delight of those present.

Following this endearing moment, Prince William proceeded to the chapel located at the base of the statue, where he spent quality time with the Earthshot Prize finalists. These finalists, totaling 15 individuals, shared their experiences in the Earthshot Prize Finalist Programme and their aspirations for environmental advancements before the upcoming awards ceremony. The programme offers crucial support such as mentorship, international visibility, legal aid, and strategic guidance to amplify their initiatives and impact.
One of the finalists, Thiago Picolo, CEO of Brazil’s Re.Green, expressed his excitement at Prince William’s visit, highlighting the royal family’s dedication to conservation and restoration efforts. Picolo commended the Earthshot Prize for inspiring and acknowledging environmental initiatives, propelling companies like Re.Green to greater heights. Similarly, Runa Khan of Friendship in Bangladesh, another finalist, underscored the global recognition and opportunities catalysed by the Earthshot Prize, empowering their impactful work aiding climate-displaced communities.
The evening promised the announcement of winners across categories like Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World, and Fix Our Climate, each receiving a $1.3 million prize to bolster innovative solutions. Additions to the event’s allure included appearances by renowned personalities like Kylie Minogue, Shawn Mendes, and Cafú. Furthermore, the event showcased environmental solutions such as regenerative packaging materials and seaweed-based alternatives.
Throughout his visit to Brazil, Prince William engaged in various activities, from playing beach volleyball at Copacabana Beach to showcasing his football skills at Maracanã Stadium. His commitment to environmental conservation and support for innovative sustainability endeavours resonated with finalists and attendees alike, reaffirming the importance of global cooperation in combatting climate challenges. As Prince William continues to champion environmental causes, his presence at the Earthshot Prize ceremony in Brazil serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for a greener tomorrow.
