Bobby Moynihan Recounts Peculiar Encounter with Val Kilmer on ‘SNL’ Set: ‘I Can’t Explain It’
Bobby Moynihan, the former cast member of Saturday Night Live, has recently shared a curious anecdote involving the late actor Val Kilmer. In an interview published by Entertainment Weekly on November 4, Moynihan revealed a peculiar incident that took place in his SNL dressing room. The actor, known for his upcoming role in the Prime Video animated series “Bat-Fam,” was reminiscing about his interactions with actors from the Batman franchise.

Recalling the strange encounter, Moynihan, 48, mentioned, “I was sitting in my dressing room, probably smoking a cigarette — I was a smoker at the time… There’s a knock on my dressing room door, and it just opened, and it was Val Kilmer.” Kilmer, who portrayed Batman in 1995’s “Batman Forever,” entered the room with a surprising request for Moynihan. “He had two or three boxes of shoes with him, and he said, ‘Hey, man, do you want those shoes?'” Moynihan recounted.

The interaction took a bizarre turn when Moynihan mentioned that Usain Bolt had recently gifted shoes to everyone on the show. It seems Kilmer was inexplicably carrying some of these shoes and offered them to Moynihan. Despite the unusual circumstances, Moynihan decided to let Kilmer take the shoes, saying, “For some reason I said ‘No,’ and Val took them and left, and I never saw him again… I can’t explain it. I don’t know why he needed so many Usain Bolt shoes.”
Val Kilmer, who passed away in April at the age of 65, made a lasting impression on Moynihan during this peculiar interaction. Reflecting on the incident, Moynihan expressed, “I’m glad that Val Kilmer got what he needed in that moment. It couldn’t have been more perfect.” Kilmer’s appearance on SNL included a 2011 Digital Short titled “Best Friends,” alongside Katy Perry and Matt Damon, as well as hosting the show in 2000.
Over the years, Kilmer has been regarded as an enigmatic and occasionally challenging actor. However, his daughter Mercedes debunked some misconceptions about him in a 2021 interview with PEOPLE. She clarified, “Some of it is an incorrect portrayal of him… He is very private, and he’s such a serious actor.” Mercedes highlighted her father’s dedication to his craft and the professional persona he maintained during work.
In his 2020 memoir, “I’m Your Huckleberry,” Kilmer revealed insights into his acting career, including his initial reluctance towards accepting the role of Iceman in 1986’s “Top Gun.” Despite his reservations, Kilmer embraced the character, leading to a memorable performance. When the opportunity arose for the sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kilmer enthusiastically advocated for revisiting his iconic role, emphasizing the enduring impact of his character on audiences.
The story of Bobby Moynihan and Val Kilmer’s unusual encounter serves as a reminder of the unpredictable and memorable moments that occur behind the scenes in the entertainment industry. Despite Kilmer’s passing, his legacy lives on through captivating anecdotes like this one, shedding light on the complexities and eccentricities of showbiz personalities.
