In a heart-stopping incident, two cyclists had a close encounter with a mountain lion while traversing a trail in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park, located in Lake Forest, California. The cyclists, who chose to remain anonymous, captured the terrifying face-off with the mountain lion on video and shared their story with ABC7 Eyewitness News. The mountain lion, also known as a cougar, puma, or panther, was spotted by the cyclists nestled in some bushes along the trail at the Orange County park.

The footage of the encounter shows the mountain lion cautiously peering out from behind some leaves before emerging from the brush and beginning to follow the cyclists along the trail. The cyclists, in an attempt to ward off the cat, can be heard shouting, “Go away, kitty!” while keeping a safe distance from the curious animal. As the cyclists backed away, the mountain lion continued to advance towards them, prompting moments of fear and tension during the encounter.

Mark Girardeau, a scientist and wildlife photographer, analysed the footage and suggested that the mountain lion appeared to be a young juvenile, recently separated from its mother. He explained that the cat’s behaviour was likely due to its inexperience and curiosity about humans. Despite the mountain lion’s close approach, the cyclists managed to escape without any harm, as the animal eventually veered off the trail and disappeared into the wilderness.
This unsettling incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers lurking in wildlife habitats, and the importance of staying vigilant and informed while exploring nature. Park rangers have been made aware of the encounter with the mountain lion, and precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of visitors in the area. The Mountain Lion Foundation offers valuable advice on encountering these majestic creatures in the wild, emphasizing the need to remain calm, alert, and prepared when in mountain lion territory.
It is crucial for individuals to be aware of their surroundings, especially during peak mountain lion activity times at dusk and dawn, and to take preventive measures such as making noise, wearing bright clothing, and travelling in groups. The foundation also stresses the importance of respecting wildlife by maintaining a safe distance, avoiding confrontation, and knowing how to react in case of an attack. By following these guidelines, visitors can navigate their outdoor adventures responsibly and coexist harmoniously with the diverse wildlife that inhabits these natural habitats.
