The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, recently provided insights into the possibility of him becoming a United States citizen during an appearance on the Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know podcast. Alongside his wife, Meghan Markle, Harry relocated to California after stepping back from their royal duties in 2020.

In a surprising revelation during the “Royal Rapid Fire” segment of the podcast, host Hasan Minhaj directly asked Prince Harry about his intentions of obtaining US citizenship. Responding to the query, the 41-year-old royal stated, “Am I going to become a U.S. citizen? There are no plans to be, at this point.”

Born in London as a member of the British royal family, Prince Harry’s move to the United States with Meghan Markle saw them settle in California, her place of origin. The couple now raise their children, Prince Archie aged 6, and Princess Lilibet aged 4, in the sunny state. Despite considering US citizenship previously, Harry emphasised that it was not currently a priority for him.
Last year, in an interview on Good Morning America, Prince Harry shared his fondness for life in the US, expressing his enjoyment of every day spent there. When questioned about feeling “American,” Harry lightheartedly admitted uncertainty. Nevertheless, he candidly disclosed, “I have considered it, yeah,” when prompted about potentially pursuing American citizenship.
Offering further glimpses into his American lifestyle on the Hasan Minhaj podcast, Prince Harry highlighted surfing as his most American habit, while joking about his reluctance to indulge in specific American stereotypes like drinking Coors Light or wearing shorts in restaurants. Minhaj even playfully challenged Harry to attempt an American accent on the show, leading to laughs all around.
The couple, known for embracing a multicultural approach, has introduced their children to various American customs, including visits to Disneyland and partaking in pumpkin-picking activities before Halloween. Additionally, Meghan Markle had initially planned to attain UK citizenship following their engagement in 2017, though she eventually did not complete the rigorous process.
Reflecting on her citizenship exam experience, Duchess Meghan recounted the arduous nature of the UK’s citizenship test during an episode of her Archetypes podcast in 2022. Describing the exam as challenging, she shared moments of incredulity while studying and quizzing her husband on the intricacies of the process.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue to navigate their dual cultural identities while settling into their American abode. As they explore the possibilities of potential citizenship considerations, their journey remains one of keen interest to royal watchers and fans worldwide.
In a world where cross-cultural influences shape modern identities, Prince Harry’s reflections on citizenship underscore the complexities and nuances of personal and national belonging. As the royal couple embraces new experiences and traditions, their story serves as a testament to the evolving nature of contemporary royal life.
