Hurricane Melissa made headlines as a Category 5 storm that struck Jamaica, leaving behind a trail of destruction. However, even before the hurricane hit, fake videos purportedly showcasing the devastation began circulating on social media platforms. These misleading videos led to confusion and false narratives, prompting the need for vigilance when consuming such content.

Jeremy Carrasco, an AI consultant and creator of @showtoolsai on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, has confirmed the falsity of several of these videos and provided insights on how to spot AI-generated content related to hurricanes. Many of these fabricated videos bear the watermark of Sora, an artificial intelligence app developed by OpenAI for generating content.

One such video, shared by creator Suniel Sapkota, depicts a purported view from a commercial aircraft flying over the eye of the hurricane, with a voice claiming to be the pilot providing commentary. Carrasco highlighted distinctive features of AI involvement in the video, such as the pilot’s speech cadence and the presence of visual artifacts characteristic of Sora-generated content.
A crucial aspect to consider when evaluating the authenticity of such videos is to scrutinize the creator’s account for any disclosure regarding the use of AI technology. TikTok creator WembySpurs shared a video titled “View from a hotel room of Hurricane Melissa hitting Jamaica,” where anomalies like stationary palm trees midway through the video hinted at its artificial origin. The video also carried an obligatory AI-generated label mandated by TikTok.
Similarly, a Facebook Reel claiming to depict “Jamaica Underwater” during Hurricane Melissa was debunked due to its incorrect timeline alignment with the storm’s landfall. By reading the caption in full, viewers can often discern if a video is a product of AI manipulation.
Carrasco also pointed out discrepancies in another TikTok video by user torstenkuenzlen, featuring supposed footage of the damage at Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport. Inconsistencies such as misspelling the airport’s name and inaccurate depictions of the airport’s exterior suggest the video’s inauthenticity.
In response to these instances, an OpenAI spokesperson emphasized Sora’s role in providing a dedicated space for AI-generated content and implementing visible watermarks and provenance signatures to identify videos created with their technology. They also mentioned employing internal tools for verifying the authenticity of Sora-generated content and enforcing policies against deceptive practices.
Furthermore, reports indicate that Hurricane Melissa has weakened to a Category 2 storm after traversing Cuba and now resides in the Atlantic Ocean. The hurricane’s impact on Jamaica was severe, damaging critical infrastructure and causing widespread flooding and destruction. As the region grapples with the aftermath of the storm, distinguishing between factual and fabricated information becomes imperative.
As natural disasters continue to pose significant threats globally, the proliferation of misinformation through manipulated media highlights the importance of media literacy and critical thinking. By remaining vigilant and discerning when consuming content related to such events, individuals can combat the spread of fake news and uphold the integrity of factual reporting.
