Susan Lorincz, the woman who shot and killed her neighbour through her front door in 2023, sparked a nationwide outrage when she claimed she acted in self-defence. The incident took place in Florida where Lorincz, a White woman in her late 50s, shot Ajike Owens, a 35-year-old Black mother of four, following a long-standing feud over children playing in their Ocala neighbourhood.

The dispute between Lorincz and Owens had been ongoing, with Lorincz reportedly having a history of harassing children playing near her home and frequently calling the police over the matter. The situation escalated on June 2, 2023, when Lorincz allegedly threw a roller skate at Owens’ son, leading to a confrontation at Lorincz’s door. Despite Owens being unarmed and accompanied by her 10-year-old son, a single shot fired by Lorincz through the locked door resulted in Owens’ tragic death.

Following the shooting, Lorincz was arrested and charged with manslaughter among other offences. The case reignited discussions on ‘stand your ground’ laws, with at least 30 states, including Florida, allowing individuals to use deadly force if they believe they are being threatened. The tragic events leading up to Owens’ death are now in the spotlight in Netflix’s documentary, ‘The Perfect Neighbor’, which sheds light on the complexities of the case.
Lorincz, who developed a reputation for harassing neighbourhood children and using racial slurs, was found guilty of manslaughter during her trial in August 2024. Despite her claims of self-defence, the jury determined that her actions were not justifiable under the law. In November 2024, she was sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally shooting Owens through her front door.
Currently serving her sentence at the Homestead Correctional Institution in South Florida, Lorincz recently spoke out in a September 2025 interview where she alleged that she felt threatened by Owens and her children. Expressing remorse for her actions, she stated that she never intended to take Owens’ life and that the events had left her heartbroken.
The case of Susan Lorincz serves as a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence and the complexities surrounding self-defence laws. The documentary showcasing the events leading up to the fatal shooting highlights the need for further discussions on conflict resolution and the implications of using deadly force in perceived threatening situations. As Susan Lorincz serves her sentence, the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of a senseless tragedy.
