Renowned actor Chris O’Donnell recently shared his thoughts on which of his former Grey’s Anatomy colleagues he would love to see make an appearance on his latest series, 9-1-1: Nashville. The 55-year-old star, known for his role as one of Meredith’s love interests on Grey’s Anatomy in seasons 2 and 3 back in the mid-2000s, sat down for an exclusive chat with PEOPLE during the premiere of 9-1-1 at the W Hotel in Nashville on October 7.

Reflecting on his time on Grey’s Anatomy, O’Donnell praised his former cast members, singling out Sandra Oh, Patrick Dempsey, and Ellen Pompeo. He expressed admiration for their talent and mentioned his former proximity to Dempsey when they resided in the same neighbourhood. As Grey’s Anatomy marks its 22nd season, O’Donnell reminisced about the show’s longevity since its debut in 2005.
Interestingly, O’Donnell already reunites with one of his former Grey’s Anatomy co-stars, Jessica Capshaw, in 9-1-1: Nashville. Having previously worked together on the legal drama series The Practice, O’Donnell reflected on the serendipity of sharing screen time once again with Capshaw.
9-1-1: Nashville stands as the latest addition to the expanding 9-1-1 universe, following the original series’ debut in 2018, set in Los Angeles, and the subsequent 9-1-1: Lone Star in 2020, which portrays the lives of first responders in Austin, Texas.
In discussing his approach to the new show, O’Donnell emphasised the importance of hard work and focus for actors as they navigate the unpredictable industry. He acknowledged the unpredictability of show success, citing examples of series with exceptional elements that fail to resonate with audiences. O’Donnell characterised success in the industry as akin to capturing lightning in a bottle.
The filming of 9-1-1: Nashville takes place on location in Tennessee, a setting O’Donnell has grown fond of. Expressing his admiration for Nashville as a city rich in musical talent, he marvelled at the live music culture permeating local establishments. The actor conveyed a sense of awe at the abundance of talent in the city, juxtaposed with the challenges many aspiring artists face in realising their dreams.
9-1-1: Nashville airs on ABC on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET, while also being available for streaming on Hulu. Viewers can tune in to witness O’Donnell’s latest endeavour unfold in the vibrant and dynamic backdrop of Music City.
