The upcoming auctions by Bonhams Auctions are set to feature items from the estate of the late actor Gene Hackman. The auctions will include various pieces of memorabilia, such as his art collection, movie scripts, posters, and notably, three of his Golden Globes. Gene Hackman passed away in February at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy that continues to captivate fans and collectors alike.

Bonhams revealed on October 16 that they will be conducting three auctions in total, with the first one titled “The Gene Hackman Collection: A Life in Art.” This auction, scheduled for November 19 in New York, will primarily showcase the art collection that Hackman meticulously curated over his lifetime. Andrew Huber, Bonhams’ Head of 20th & 21st Century Art, expressed the significance of the collection, highlighting its association with one of the most distinguished actors of our time.

Hackman, known for his roles in iconic films such as “The French Connection” and “The Royal Tenenbaums,” had a profound love for art that only grew after his retirement from acting in 2004. This deep passion is reflected in the pieces that will be up for auction, showcasing his artistic sensibilities and the care he devoted to his collection.
Aside from the art auction, Bonhams will also host two online sales commencing on November 8 and November 25. These sales will feature a range of personal artworks, annotated books from Hackman’s library, scripts, posters, and other memorabilia that offer insights into his celebrated movie career. Among the highlights of the auctions are the three Golden Globes awarded to Hackman, recognising his exceptional performances in films like “Unforgiven” and “The Royal Tenenbaums.”
In addition to his contributions to the film industry, Hackman was a published novelist and a multifaceted artist. His passing earlier this year, alongside his wife Betsy, marked the end of a chapter for the beloved couple who shared a life in Santa Fe, New Mexico, after tying the knot in 1991.
Throughout his illustrious career, Hackman earned high acclaim from his peers and fans. Colleagues like Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood fondly remembered him for his unparalleled talent and unwavering dedication to his craft. Freeman, in particular, paid tribute to Hackman’s impactful legacy at the Oscars, emphasising his outstanding performances and enduring impact on the world of cinema.
As the auction date approaches, anticipation builds among enthusiasts eager to own a piece of Gene Hackman’s legacy. The auctions promise to be a unique opportunity for admirers to acquire a tangible connection to the legendary actor and artist, immortalising his remarkable contributions to the world of entertainment. Through these auctions, Hackman’s artistic spirit and enduring influence will continue to resonate with generations to come.
