Upon arrival at the scene, responders found the young boy and a woman on the sidewalk near Westinghouse Academy. The boy had suffered severe injuries to his lower extremities and was rushed to UPMC Children’s Hospital in critical condition, where he underwent immediate surgery. The woman, identified as an adult staff member, was also taken to the hospital, reported to be in a stable condition following the incident.
Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson, Emily Bourne, provided updates on the victims’ conditions, stating that although the boy was moving towards a stable condition, the crash had resulted in significant blood loss. The collision occurred when the driver veered towards the pedestrians, pinning them between the car and a low barrier, causing serious injuries to the child. Reports confirmed that the boy is a student at Westinghouse Academy, while the woman serves as a classroom assistant.

Superintendent Wayne Walters expressed concern for the victims, emphasising that they were innocently waiting for transportation when the tragic accident occurred. He extended well wishes for their recovery and urged for increased caution by drivers near school premises to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. An initial investigation revealed that the driver made a right turn onto Monticello Street from North Murtland Street but failed to maintain control, ultimately colliding with the pedestrians on the sidewalk.

Witnesses recalled the harrowing event, noting that the collision happened very quickly, giving little time for bystanders to react. Despite the driver remaining at the scene and cooperating with authorities, suspicions of alcohol intoxication being a contributing factor have emerged. Bourne highlighted the likelihood of charges being pressed in connection with the incident as investigations continue, encompassing all available evidence such as surveillance footage and eyewitness testimonies.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic accident, concerns over pedestrian safety and driver responsibility have come to the fore. Accidents involving vulnerable road users, particularly in school zones, serve as poignant reminders of the need for heightened vigilance and adherence to traffic regulations. Authorities are committed to unravelling the circumstances surrounding the collision thoroughly, seeking justice for the victims and working towards preventing similar incidents in the future.
