A retired California Highway Patrol officer, Pilot Chad Millward, is in critical condition after a helicopter crash on a busy highway. The incident occurred on the evening of Monday, October 6, when the medical helicopter Millward was piloting crashed onto Highway 50 in Sacramento. Thankfully, no cars were hit during the crash, but Millward, along with Flight Paramedic Margaret “DeDe” Davis and Flight Nurse Susan “Suzie” Smith, who were also onboard, sustained critical injuries. The company that owns the medical helicopter, Reach Air, provided an update stating that Millward and Davis were in critical but stable condition, while Smith remained critical but unstable as of Friday, October 10.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently investigating the helicopter crash, adhering to standard aviation protocol. Dashcam footage from the evening of the incident captured the helicopter’s rapid descent from the sky before colliding with the right-side shoulder lane and crashing into the median. Fortunately, no cars were struck during the crash. Bystanders rushed to the wreckage to assist first responders in lifting the helicopter off those trapped inside.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) expressed its deepest concern and sympathy for Pilot Chad Millward following the tragic incident. Millward, who worked for CHP for nearly three decades, received the Governor’s Public Safety Medal of Valor for his heroic actions during the 2017 Atlas Fire. Together with his partner, Flight Officer Paramedic Phil Agdeppa, Millward played a pivotal role in rescuing 41 individuals, including 15 people, five dogs, and two cats during the catastrophic fire.
The selfless actions of first responders and bystanders who immediately offered aid after the crash have been commended by CHP. The community’s quick and compassionate response exemplifies the spirit of unity during challenging times. The crash has reignited discussions around helicopter safety and the risks emergency responders face daily.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who serve in emergency response roles. It highlights the bravery and dedication of individuals like Pilot Chad Millward, who have spent their careers safeguarding communities. As the investigation into the crash continues, support and well-wishes pour in for Millward, Davis, Smith, and their families during this difficult time.
