HelloFresh has recently issued a recall on specific meal kits containing spinach due to concerns regarding Listeria contamination. The recall comes amidst a wider worry about Listeria across various ready-to-eat meal brands in the market.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) took action after routine testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in spinach used in HelloFresh meal kits. FreshRealm, a California-based company that supplies meals for HelloFresh, reported the finding to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The alert specifically mentioned two HelloFresh products that were affected by the contamination – the Cheesy Pulled Pork Pepper Pasta and Unstuffed Peppers with Ground Turkey. While no illnesses have been linked to these kits so far, the discovery raises concerns due to a broader Listeria outbreak related to pre-made pasta items sold under different brands.

The ongoing multistate outbreak, which originated from Nate’s Fine Foods in Roseville, California, has already resulted in 20 reported cases and four fatalities, according to CBS News. Genetic testing revealed the same strain of bacteria in the spinach used in the affected HelloFresh meals, suggesting a potential connection between the incidents.

Listeria infections can pose severe risks, especially to vulnerable populations such as older adults, pregnant individuals, newborns, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headaches, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures, as highlighted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Consumers who have purchased the impacted HelloFresh meals are advised not to consume them and to dispose of the products immediately. Additionally, it is recommended to thoroughly wash and sanitize any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the contaminated food, as Listeria can persist even in cold environments.

Health authorities continue to investigate the situation to determine the extent of the contamination and its potential links to the wider outbreak. While authorities emphasize that the alert is a precautionary measure, they urge consumers to remain vigilant and inspect their meal kit packaging carefully.
