The title of the world’s happiest travel destination has recently been awarded, and surprisingly, it’s not Disneyland. A new study conducted by BookRetreats has crowned Lisbon, Portugal, as the ultimate location for joyous travel experiences. The analysis, in collaboration with Harvard psychologist Dr. Natalie Dattilo-Ryan, focused on five key factors that contribute to happiness while travelling: sunlight, quality sleep, a healthy diet, time in nature, and physical exercise.

According to the findings, Lisbon emerged as the top choice due to its outstanding performance across these categories. The city’s vibrant food scene, coupled with nearly 10% of restaurants offering healthy options, made it a standout destination for feel-good experiences. Additionally, Lisbon’s walkability and picturesque views of its landmarks provide visitors with a delightful way to explore the city on foot, enhancing their overall travel satisfaction.
Moreover, the presence of ample green spaces and an impressive 2,828 hours of annual sunshine were highlighted as key elements that contribute to Lisbon being touted as the happiest travel destination globally. Dr. Dattilo-Ryan emphasised the importance of these factors in triggering the release of “happy hormones” in the body, leading to enhanced mood, energy levels, and overall well-being. Choosing a destination with features like sunlight, movement, good food, and quality rest can significantly impact a traveller’s experience.

While Lisbon claimed the top spot, the study also recognised Orlando, Florida, as one of the top five happiest travel destinations. Known as the “Theme Park Capital of the World,” Orlando’s abundance of green spaces, including 148 parks, gardens, and recreation areas, contributed to its high ranking. Despite scoring lower in healthy dining options and quality sleep, Orlando’s sunny weather, with 2,930 hours of sunshine annually, makes it an attractive choice for outdoor activities and theme park visits.

This study sheds light on the importance of considering various factors beyond just attractions and amenities when planning a vacation. Factors like food quality, physical activity opportunities, and access to nature play a significant role in enhancing the overall travel experience and well-being of individuals. By choosing destinations that prioritise these aspects, travellers can optimise their happiness and satisfaction during their trips.
The recognition of Lisbon and Orlando as top contenders in the list of happiest travel destinations serves as a reminder of the diverse elements that contribute to a fulfilling travel experience. Whether seeking cultural exploration, culinary delights, or outdoor adventures, these destinations offer a blend of factors that cater to different preferences and contribute to overall travel satisfaction. As travellers plan their next trips, considering these happiness-inducing factors can lead to a more enriching and enjoyable travel experience.
