P.F. Chang’s, a well-known Asian restaurant chain, has agreed to pay $80,000 in a settlement to resolve a religious discrimination claim made by a job applicant. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) conducted an investigation into the matter and determined that the applicant was not hired because of their request for Sundays off due to religious reasons. The specific P.F. Chang’s location involved in the case is situated in Birmingham, Alabama.

The settlement stems from an incident during the interview process in August 2024 at the Birmingham P.F. Chang’s outlet. The applicant had requested Sundays off as it aligned with their religious beliefs. However, the EEOC found that the applicant’s request for an accommodation led to them being denied employment. As part of the settlement, P.F. Chang’s, which was acquired by private equity firms in 2019, will provide back pay, compensatory and punitive damages, and update its written policies and procedures regarding religious accommodations.
Additionally, the restaurant chain has committed to conducting training sessions for its employees and managers at the Birmingham location. The training will focus on educating staff about equal employment opportunity rights and responsibilities, with a particular emphasis on religious accommodations. Bradley Anderson, the director of the EEOC’s Birmingham District Office, praised P.F. Chang’s for their efforts in ensuring that employees’ sincerely held religious beliefs are accommodated within the workplace.
Anderson emphasised the importance of employers recognising and addressing requests for religious accommodations in compliance with federal law. He highlighted that reasonable religious accommodations should be provided unless they create an undue hardship for the business. Despite attempts to reach out for a statement regarding the settlement, a spokesperson for the restaurant was not immediately available for comment.
The case serves as a reminder for all employers to train their staff to handle requests for religious accommodations appropriately. Ensuring compliance with laws surrounding religious freedoms and accommodations is essential in fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment. The EEOC’s involvement in resolving such disputes underscores the significance of upholding employees’ rights and preventing discrimination based on religious beliefs.
This settlement highlights the importance of companies adhering to anti-discrimination laws and making efforts to accommodate employees’ religious practices. It also serves as a lesson for businesses to implement proper training and policies to handle similar situations sensitively and lawfully. As businesses navigate diverse workforces, it is crucial to respect and accommodate employees’ individual beliefs and practices to promote a harmonious and inclusive workplace environment.
