Eleanor Hamby and Sandra Hazelip, both in their 80s, have shared a friendship spanning over two decades, which ultimately led them on a remarkable journey across all seven continents. Their upcoming book, “Here We Go: Lessons for Living Fearlessly from Two Traveling Nanas,” is set to be released on Sept. 16.

Their friendship blossomed following significant life changes, including becoming empty nesters and facing the loss of their husbands. Meeting initially at a medical missions workshop in Dallas, it wasn’t until after both had experienced personal tragedies that their bond deepened. Five years after Hazelip lost her husband to illness, tragedy struck again when Hamby’s husband passed away suddenly in a tennis accident.
After Hamby’s husband’s death, Hazelip reached out with an unconventional proposal to stay at her place a couple of nights a week in exchange for dinner. This gesture kickstarted a friendship that would lead them on extraordinary adventures across the globe. Despite their differing personalities, they found common ground in their outlook on life and their shared sense of curiosity and adventure.
Their first major journey together outside of mission work took place in 2008 when they travelled second-class on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Embracing a budget-friendly travel style of $29 per night, they opted for more authentic experiences, steering clear of luxury accommodations and tourist traps.
In 2020, Hazelip proposed an audacious idea – to travel the world in 80 days at the age of 80. Inspired by Jules Verne’s character Phileas Fogg, the duo meticulously planned their trip, covering all seven continents, major cities visited by Fogg, and the seven wonders of the world. Their plans were briefly put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but they persevered and set off on their journey in January 2023.
From exploring the wonders of Antarctica to navigating the bustling streets of Cairo on a shoestring budget, Hamby and Hazelip’s adventures have captured the hearts of millions worldwide. Whether escaping conflict zones or marveling at natural phenomena like the Northern Lights, their tales inspire others to break boundaries and chase their dreams, no matter their age.
Their travel styles may differ, with Hamby embracing thrills like ziplining and shark snorkelling, and Hazelip finding joy in simpler pleasures like a good book and a cup of coffee. Despite their variances, their shared determination to explore uncharted territories has led them to remote corners of the world, creating lasting memories and stories to cherish.
While their whirlwind “Around the World in 80 Days” adventure may not be repeated, Hamby and Hazelip have opted for a slower pace, savouring each continent for 30 to 40 days. They continue to inspire others through their upcoming book, sharing valuable lessons learned from their fearless escapades. Their message is clear – it’s never too late to step out of your comfort zone, embrace new experiences, and live life to the fullest.
As they recount their Bali Swing experience, suspended high above lush green landscapes, Hamby and Hazelip embody the essence of living fearlessly in their golden years. Their journey, both physical and emotional, serves as a testament to the enduring power of friendship, resilience, and the insatiable thirst for adventure, regardless of age or circumstance.
