The Miss America pageant, one of the most prestigious beauty pageants in the United States, recently announced several updated eligibility rules for contestants participating in the upcoming competitions. Each year, the competition awards a $50,000 tuition scholarship to the winner through the Miss America’s Scholarship Foundation Inc. One significant change in the eligibility requirements for contestants participating in the Miss America pageant is the age limits. As of Sept. 30, 2026, contestants must be between the ages of 18 to 28 to be eligible for the competition. Additionally, contestants for the Miss America’s Teen subdivision must be between the ages of 14 to 18 by Sept. 30, 2026. The organisation allows 18-year-old contestants to have a transitional year to decide between competing in the Teen or Miss division.

Moreover, contestants are required to meet specific residency rules, ensuring that they are legitimate residents of the state they represent. This includes providing evidence of residing in the state for a continuous 120-day period. Alternatively, contestants can qualify based on employment eligibility or student status within the state they wish to represent. Contestants are also prohibited from being married or having children during the competition.

Unlike some other pageants, Miss America includes a talent competition as a vital component of its scoring system, contributing to 20% of the total score. In 2018, the pageant eliminated the traditional swimsuit competition, aiming to move away from judging based on physical appearance. Instead, contestants are evaluated in categories such as private interview, fitness, talent, evening wear, and on-stage questions.

Throughout the Miss America competition, judges assess participants based on these five main categories, with each section carrying a specific weight in the overall scoring. The evening wear portion focuses on confidence and composure, showcasing the contestants’ ability to represent the Miss America organization effectively if crowned the winner.
