A shocking incident has emerged in Melbourne, Australia, where a trainee doctor is facing a plethora of charges for allegedly filming numerous colleagues in hospital bathrooms without their consent. The accused, Ryan Cho, aged 28, has been slapped with over 130 charges and was granted bail on Friday, August 22.
According to reports from various news outlets, Ryan Cho stands accused of stalking, producing intimate images, and surreptitiously installing surveillance devices in hospital bathrooms. The Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC) reported that authorities found approximately 4,500 inappropriate photos and videos of female victims on Cho’s electronic devices.

Investigations reveal that Cho allegedly positioned hidden cameras in the bathrooms of three hospitals – Austin Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and the Royal Melbourne Hospital – since 2021. It is reported that around 450 alleged victims were captured on camera without their knowledge.

Cho, who was employed at Austin Hospital, was apprehended on July 10 after a staff member noticed a cell phone recording in a bathroom. Subsequently, he was released on bail by the Victorian Supreme Court under stringent conditions, including a curfew, mandatory psychological treatment, residing with his parents who had to pay a $32,000 surety, and a ban from entering hospitals except in emergencies. Additionally, Cho, originally from Singapore, surrendered his passport to the authorities.
At this stage, Cho’s lawyer, Julian McMahon SC, has refuted claims of his client distributing the incriminating material or physically threatening the alleged victims. McMahon highlighted Cho’s complex psychiatric issues, suggesting a potential mental health aspect to his actions.
The extent of the scandal is still unclear as authorities continue their probe to ascertain the full scope of the alleged offences. While the exact number of potential victims remains unknown, investigations are ongoing to uncover any additional instances of privacy breaches.
This distressing case serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding privacy and security in professional environments. The violation of trust and invasion of privacy experienced by the alleged victims highlight the need for stringent measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
As the legal proceedings progress, it is imperative that justice is served, and the affected individuals receive the necessary support and redress. This incident underscores the significance of adherence to ethical standards and the protection of individuals’ rights in all settings, especially within the medical fraternity where trust and integrity are paramount.
In conclusion, the ordeal involving Ryan Cho serves as a cautionary tale about the repercussions of breaching privacy and trust in professional settings. It is essential for organisations to enforce robust safeguards to prevent such violations and ensure the safety and security of all individuals within their premises.
