In a surprising move, President Donald Trump has dedicated a room in the White House to showcase a collection of MAGA merchandise, which includes items like ‘Trump 2028’ hats. The display, set up in the West Wing, was recently unveiled by the president during meetings with world leaders. This bold move is just one of the many ways Trump is personalizing the White House during his term.

The collection of Trump-branded merchandise includes a variety of items ranging from books to water bottles, cufflinks, and of course, the signature baseball caps with slogans like “Trump 2028” and “Trump Was Right About Everything.” The display first caught attention when it was spotted in the background of a video featuring Trump hosting the president of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, on August 9. It gained more traction after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders visited on August 18.

Margo Martin, Trump’s special assistant and communications advisor, shared a photo showcasing the president presenting Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron with a red baseball cap that read “4 More Years.” This move by Trump to exhibit his own merchandise within the White House is a departure from the traditional official White House gift shop, which was established by President Harry S. Truman in 1950.
When questioned about the merchandise, the Trump White House has not provided further information. This approach by Trump to showcase his merchandise in the White House adds to the overall transformation he is making to the residence. The president seems to be infusing elements of his personal preferences, akin to his Mar-A-Lago club and home, into the White House atmosphere.
Apart from the MAGA merchandise display, Trump has made other notable changes to the White House, such as upgrading the Rose Garden with new patio furniture sourced from the same supplier as his Palm Beach resort. The first lady, Melania Trump, who oversaw the redesign of the rose bushes in 2020, reportedly approves of these changes. Trump is said to be enthusiastic about the revamped Rose Garden, seeing it as a prelude to a significant upcoming event.
Notably, critics have taken issue with Trump’s additions to the White House decor, including new portraits of himself displacing portraits of previous presidents, and his revamp of the Oval Office with gold accents. Musician Jack White criticized the transformation, describing it as a tacky and gaudy remodelling that detracts from the historic significance of the White House.
As the Trump administration continues to leave its mark on the White House, the debate over the appropriateness of these changes rages on. The clash between preserving the heritage of the White House and personalizing the residence to reflect the current president’s taste raises questions about the role of tradition and legacy in the executive mansion. With Trump’s term ongoing, the White House’s evolution under his leadership remains a topic of interest and discussion.
