Crown Prince Haakon of Norway has recently broken his silence after his stepson, Marius Borg Høiby, was accused of rape and domestic violence and is facing a total of 32 criminal charges. The 27-year-old Høiby, who denies the most serious allegations against him, including rape and domestic violence, was first arrested in August 2024. Reports indicate that he intends to plead guilty to some lesser charges.

In an official statement, Prince Haakon expressed his commitment to continue fulfilling his duties despite the challenging circumstances. The Prince acknowledged the complexity of the situation, stating, “Everyone involved in this case probably finds it challenging and difficult.” Høiby’s legal representative has confirmed that while he is willing to admit to certain offenses, he vehemently contests the severe accusations leveled against him.
Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship before her marriage to Crown Prince Haakon in 2000, has never held a royal title or a place in the line of succession. In 2017, it was announced that he would not have a public role within the royal family. Prince Haakon and Princess Mette-Marit also have two younger children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 21, and Prince Sverre Magnus, 19, who are next in line to the throne.
The charges against Høiby involve multiple instances of abuse against different women, with allegations suggesting that he recorded some of the assaults. Following his arrest in 2024, where he was detained for 30 hours before being released, the maximum penalty for his charges could result in a 10-year prison sentence. The trial is anticipated to commence in January 2026.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit addressed the challenging circumstances faced by the royal family in the NRK program The Year of the Royal Family 2024 in December of the same year. Acknowledging the difficulties they have been navigating, she emphasised the importance of seeking professional help as a family. She highlighted the significance of maintaining their obligations to the Norwegian people amidst personal challenges.
Despite the royal connections involved, Prosecutor Sturla Henriksbo stressed that Høiby should be treated impartially in the eyes of the law, regardless of his status within the royal family. While the situation has undoubtedly garnered significant public attention, the legal proceedings are expected to proceed based on the merits of the case, independent of any external influences.
As the case continues to unfold and the royal family navigates these unprecedented circumstances, it remains essential to uphold the principles of justice and fairness. In a society built on the rule of law, all individuals, regardless of background or status, are entitled to a fair trial and due process. The coming trial will shed further light on the allegations against Marius Borg Høiby and determine the appropriate course of action in this complex and sensitive matter.
