A police officer has tragically lost his life following a shooting incident in West Philadelphia on 10 October. PPD Commissioner Kevin Bethel confirmed the incident during a press briefing. He expressed his sorrow over Seiber’s death, stating, “He fought valiantly, but he lost his life today.” The Commissioner noted that Seiber’s family was by his side at the hospital when he succumbed to his injuries.

In addition to Seiber, another officer was injured during the incident. Reports indicate that the unnamed officer was shot multiple times but is now in stable condition after undergoing surgery. The injured officer, aged 33, has five children.
The alleged perpetrator, identified as Eric Lewis, is a 35-year-old employee of the Philadelphia Water Department. District Attorney Larry Krasner announced that Lewis faces multiple charges, including murder and homicide of a law enforcement officer. He is also charged with attempted murder after reportedly firing at the injured officer and nine other officers who were in the vicinity.
The sequence of events leading to the shooting began with a report of a man with a gun on a porch located on North 52nd Street just after midnight. When the police arrived approximately thirty minutes later, they were quickly met with gunfire.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled into an alley and continued firing at police officers before being apprehended while attempting to hide in a tree. Two handguns and a shotgun were seized during the police response, with one of the firearms reportedly belonging to the injured officer.
In the wake of this devastating incident, condolences for Officer Seiber’s family have poured in from local and state officials. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro shared his tribute on social media, recognising the bravery of officers like Seiber who risk their lives to ensure the safety of citizens. He has ordered flags on Commonwealth grounds to be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect.
Senator Dave McCormick also expressed his sorrow, stating, “Officer Seiber put on the badge to protect his fellow Pennsylvanians and never made it home. We will never forget his sacrifice.” The emotional toll of the incident extends beyond the immediate family, with the entire Philadelphia Police Department mourning the loss of one of their own.
Philadelphia’s Mayor, Cherelle Parker, highlighted the deep impact of the tragedy, offering heartfelt condolences to Seiber’s family and friends. She remarked, “My deepest condolences are with everyone who loved him. We are keeping his fellow officers in the 19th District close in our hearts as they grieve this loss.”
As the investigation into the shooting continues, the city and its law enforcement community find themselves in a period of mourning, reflecting on the bravery and sacrifice of Officer Shane Seiber, a dedicated public servant who tragically made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
