A man has recently been charged with defrauding multiple couples in Texas who were planning to tie the knot. The accused, Carl John Butcho II, was taken into custody by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office on a warrant related to a major theft case. Nicknamed the ‘Wedding Scammer,’ Butcho is facing charges of Theft of Property valued between $150,000 and $300,000.
According to reports from Fox 26 Houston, Butcho operated under the alias ‘Lance Miller,’ presenting himself as the owner and manager of the Charleston Lane Wedding Venue in Willis, TX. Authorities believe that Butcho deceived 12 individuals into paying a total of $202,424.90 for weddings that never materialised. Additionally, five couples who did hold their weddings at the venue did not receive promised refunds, resulting in further losses of $11,450.00.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that Butcho has been booked into Travis County Jail, where he is being held on a $100,000 bond. Conditions of his bond include no contact with the victims, GPS monitoring, surrender of his passport, and a prohibition from engaging in wedding or event planning businesses. Furthermore, he faces supplementary charges in Travis County for False Statement to Obtain Property or Credit and Fraudulent Securing of Document Execution.

Sheriff Wesley Doolittle emphasised the commitment of law enforcement in pursuing justice for the victims, stating, “These victims placed their trust in someone who exploited their special day for personal gain, and we are committed to ensuring that justice is served.” He also expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation in the investigation and urged anyone potentially affected by the case to reach out to authorities with information.
The Charleston Lane Wedding Venue in Willis, Texas, which Butcho allegedly misrepresented, has since been listed as permanently closed online. Despite the venue’s closure, Butcho reportedly continued to accept payments for wedding services he never delivered. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of due diligence and verifying the authenticity of businesses and individuals involved in significant life events.
As the news of the ‘Wedding Scammer’ unfolds, it highlights the vulnerabilities individuals may face when entrusting significant milestones to others. The alleged actions of Butcho underscore the importance of conducting thorough background checks and seeking recommendations before engaging with event planners or venues. The impact of such deceit can have lasting repercussions on couples and their families, emphasising the necessity for transparency and accountability in all transactions.
In a bid to support affected couples and prevent similar incidents in the future, law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the case diligently. The charges brought against Butcho serve as a warning to others who may seek to exploit unsuspecting individuals for personal gain. The justice system remains vigilant in safeguarding the rights and interests of the community, ensuring that those who engage in fraudulent activities face legal consequences.
