Former Minnesota meteorologist, Renee Fox, professionally known as Wren Clair, has recently taken legal action against her previous workplace, KSTP in St. Paul. In a lawsuit filed on August 12, Fox accuses her former employer of sex discrimination, sexual harassment, and retaliation. The lawsuit specifically targets her former boss, Kirk Varner, the former news director at KSTP.

Fox claims that Varner made inappropriate comments about her appearance and subjected her to sexist behaviour. Varner allegedly remarked on her body and appearance, going as far as commenting on her choice of clothing and hair colour. According to the lawsuit, Varner expressed a preference for Fox to wear tighter outfits and criticised her for switching from blonde to her natural hair colour.

Furthermore, Fox asserts that Varner’s discriminatory conduct extended beyond verbal remarks. She alleges that Varner assigned her less desirable work hours and tasks, and provided inadequate support for her professional growth compared to her male colleagues. Despite raising concerns about Varner’s behaviour multiple times, Fox claims that no action was taken to address the issue, even by the Human Resources department.
Fox’s complaints against Varner reportedly led to a series of retaliatory actions. In October 2024, Fox was demoted, and ultimately terminated on February 12, 2025, with more than two years remaining on her contract. The termination was purportedly justified by citing ‘unsatisfactory performance,’ despite Fox receiving positive feedback and enjoying popularity among viewers.
Paul M. Schinner, Fox’s attorney, emphasised the seriousness of the allegations, stating that the conduct exhibited by Varner amounts to sexual harassment and retaliation under Minnesota law. Schinner highlighted the unfair treatment Fox endured after dedicating seven years of her career to KSTP. Fox’s legal team is seeking back pay, compensatory damages, and punitive damages to be determined by a jury.
KSTP’s current news director, Mike Garber, declined to comment on the specifics of the lawsuit, stating that the station does not comment on personnel matters or ongoing legal disputes. The allegations put forth by Fox shed light on the challenges faced by individuals in the workplace, particularly within male-dominated industries such as broadcast journalism.
Instances of workplace harassment and discrimination, as highlighted in Fox’s lawsuit, underscore the importance of creating a safe and inclusive work environment for all employees. Addressing such issues promptly and effectively is crucial in upholding the principles of equality and respect in professional settings.
The legal proceedings initiated by Fox serve as a reminder of the significance of standing up against misconduct and seeking justice in the face of adversity. As the case unfolds, it brings attention to the need for robust measures to prevent and address workplace discrimination, ensuring fair treatment and opportunities for all individuals in the workforce.
In conclusion, Fox’s courageous decision to pursue legal action against KSTP sends a powerful message about the importance of holding employers accountable for maintaining a workplace free from harassment and discrimination. The lawsuit serves as a call to action for organisations to prioritise a culture of respect, equality, and professionalism in the workplace to foster a conducive environment for all employees.
