The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, have taken a moment to honour and commemorate those who served in the Asia-Pacific region 80 years ago during World War II. Despite being on their summer break, the royal couple felt compelled to mark the occasion with an emotional message.

In their heartfelt message shared on social media on August 15, Kate and William paid tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of all those who served during the war. They specifically mentioned the British and Commonwealth troops who fought in the Asia-Pacific, acknowledging the debt of gratitude owed to the wartime generation.
The couple concluded their message with the poignant words, “Lest we forget. W&C,” signifying their ongoing respect and remembrance for the sacrifices made during that time.
VJ Day, which stands for Victory over Japan Day, marks the end of World War II in Japan and the Pacific region. The surrender of Japan came shortly after the devastating atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.
Earlier in May, the royal family, including Prince William and Kate’s three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – honoured the end of the war in Europe with parades and ceremonies in London. The family’s commitment to remembering and acknowledging historical milestones is evident in their active participation in such commemorations.
As the nation marked the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, King Charles and Queen Camilla led the UK in a service of remembrance at the National Arboretum in Staffordshire. King Charles, in his address to the nation, praised the courage and camaraderie displayed by the veterans and their families during the darkest hours of the war.
Reflecting on his grandfather King George VI’s speech on VJ Day 80 years ago, King Charles emphasised the enduring legacy of the wartime generation and the importance of preserving the values they fought for. He also recognised the immense suffering endured by the citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, underscoring the need to prevent such tragedies from recurring in the future.
The message from Prince William and Kate Middleton on this significant anniversary serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II and the enduring importance of honouring the memory of those who fought for freedom. Their compassionate tribute resonates with the sentiments of gratitude and remembrance felt across the nation on this historic day.
