Joe Pantoliano, well-known for his role in ‘The Sopranos,’ recently opened up about the challenges he faced due to depression. The 73-year-old actor shared that his battle with depression had nearly “destroyed” his life.

During a candid conversation, Pantoliano revealed that his struggle with depression stemmed from childhood trauma. He admitted to resorting to self-medication before eventually finding solace in the support of a good psychiatrist and a twelve-step program.
The actor also joked about the nature of clinical depression, referring to it as “really a bummer” compared to bipolar disorder, which at least offers ‘highs’ along with the lows. Clinical depression is described as the most severe form of depression, characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness.
Pantoliano disclosed that he had relied on unhealthy coping mechanisms in the past, such as alcohol and risky behavior, which only exacerbated his inner turmoil. He reflected on how his struggles had affected his relationships with his family, revealing that his wife and children had reached a breaking point with him.
However, Pantoliano credits his pet dogs for being a source of light during his darkest moments. He described how his dogs were the only ones who seemed genuinely happy to see him when he was at his lowest, likening himself to a fading light that they helped to reignite.
Acknowledging the importance of seeking professional help, Pantoliano emphasised the role of a good psychiatrist and a twelve-step program in his journey towards healing. He shared that through consistent effort and daily practice, he has been able to manage his depression and find stability.
In addition to his personal struggles, Pantoliano has also taken steps to raise awareness about mental health issues. He founded the organisation ‘No Kidding? Me Too’ with the aim of reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness and promoting open discussions about mental health.
Through his advocacy work and personal story, Pantoliano aims to make conversations about mental health more mainstream and destigmatized. He highlighted the importance of prioritising mental well-being and seeking support when needed.
As Pantoliano continues to navigate his own mental health journey, he hopes that sharing his experiences will encourage others to seek help and find hope in their own battles with depression. His story serves as a reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of taking proactive steps towards mental wellness.
