McDonald’s is diving into the realm of trendy craft sodas and cold coffees by testing new drink options in over 500 locations. As Gen-Z embraces the viral “dirty soda” trend, the fast-food giant is looking to provide innovative and creative beverages for various occasions.

The fast-food chain is gearing up to launch a fresh lineup of cold drinks starting from September 2nd at more than 500 locations in Wisconsin, Colorado, and adjacent areas. The test menu will feature fruity refreshers, cold brews, and soda-based concoctions inspired by the CosMc’s concept, specifically catering to Gen Z’s preferences and snack-time needs.

This move signifies McDonald’s strategic ambition to revamp its global beverage platform, with plans to expand based on customer feedback. By aiming to curate the perfect drink for every moment, McDonald’s is stepping into uncharted territory with these new offerings.
The company disclosed that the upcoming lineup of approximately 10 drinks will fuse beloved flavours with inventive twists inspired by its small-format restaurant brand, CosMc’s. The goal is to provide a touch of happiness throughout the day, be it a rejuvenating morning drink or a delightful afternoon indulgence.
Guests can look forward to a range of coffee-based selections such as the Creamy Vanilla Cold Brew and the Toasted Vanilla Frappé along with refreshing fruity options including the Strawberry Watermelon Refresher, the Sprite Lunar Splash, and the Popping Tropic Refresher. Each beverage is crafted to offer a unique and vibrant experience.
These new offerings are aligned with the prevailing “dirty soda” trend that has gained traction on social media in recent years. This beverage typically combines a soda base with creamer, flavoured syrups, and lime juice, making it a popular choice, particularly in Utah. Credit is often attributed to Olivia Rodrigo for bringing this mocktail to the forefront.
The test menu draws inspiration from the creativity of CosMc’s, which ceased operations in May after a successful two-year run. McDonald’s aims to retain the convenience and speed that customers associate with the brand while introducing fresh and exciting drink options to cater to evolving tastes.
McDonald’s recognizes the increasing popularity of cold, flavourful drinks among consumers, especially Gen Z, who view them as a go-to treat. This presents an excellent opportunity for the company to adapt to changing consumer preferences and engage with customers in new moments like snack breaks and afternoon refuelling.
Moreover, the beverage initiative is not just about expanding the menu; it represents a strategic move towards shaping McDonald’s global beverage strategy. By leveraging the existing infrastructure, resources, and expertise, the company plans to swiftly adapt successful offerings and potentially introduce them on a larger scale.
The ongoing test is intended to refine operations and offerings with the support of restaurant teams and franchise owners before any widespread rollout. McDonald’s is committed to staying at the forefront of innovation and meeting the demands of its discerning consumer base through these exciting new beverage options.
