A recent Southwest Airlines flight departing from Burbank, California, was forced to make a sudden and extreme mid-air maneuver to evade a potential collision. The situation unfolded when the aircraft, en route to Las Vegas, encountered a Hawker Hunter aircraft, prompting a nerve-wracking dive of 475 feet to avert disaster, according to reports by ABC News.

Witnesses onboard Southwest flight 1496 described a tense moment as the plane unexpectedly descended from 14,100 feet to 13,625 feet approximately six minutes after taking off from Hollywood Burbank Airport. Passenger Steve Ulasewicz narrated experiencing a “significant drop” and revealed that the pilot informed passengers that the action was taken to steer clear of a looming mid-air clash.
Following the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a statement confirming the aircraft’s response to an alert indicating the presence of another plane in the vicinity within Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center airspace. An investigation into the event, which occurred around 11 a.m. local time on Friday, July 25, is currently underway, as confirmed by an FAA spokesperson to NBCLA.
Regarding the aftermath of the maneuver, two flight attendants on the Southwest flight required medical attention for injuries sustained during the sudden descent. However, reassuringly, no other passengers were harmed in the incident. The airline acknowledged the crew’s swift reaction to onboard traffic alerts and disclosed that the flight proceeded to land in Las Vegas without further complications.
Southwest Airlines has been in contact with the FAA to gain comprehensive insights into the circumstances surrounding the near-miss in the air. Emphasizing the company’s utmost commitment to the safety of both customers and employees, an airline representative expressed gratitude for the professionalism exhibited by the flight crew and attendants in managing the unforeseen event.
As concerned parties await further updates from the investigation, this incident stands as a stark reminder of the critical importance of vigilant air traffic management to ensure the security and well-being of all individuals onboard commercial flights. The collaborative efforts between airline staff and aviation authorities are crucial in analysing and addressing such challenging situations to prevent potential risks in the future.
In a time where air travel safety is paramount, incidents such as the recent mid-air scare involving Southwest Airlines serve as a cautionary tale, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the skies and the vital role of trained professionals in safeguarding passengers during flights.
