A 50-year-old man has recently been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the grave crime of raping a 7-year-old girl who had been attending his wife’s daycare center. The Australian man was found guilty of sexually assaulting the young girl multiple times between February 2021 and August 2022 at the home daycare in Point Cook, Victoria, located southwest of Melbourne. This disturbing case has left a lasting impact on the victim, as her mother revealed that the child is now facing difficulties at school and has developed a fear of the dark.

According to reports from 7 News, News.com.au, and the Herald Sun, the girl, who had been under the care of the daycare since the age of two, first complained to her older sister about pain in her genital area in November 2022. Upon hearing her distress, the girl’s family promptly sought medical help, leading to the involvement of local authorities. The abuse occurred in a lounge area within the daycare home after school hours and on weekends. Despite efforts to gather evidence through security camera footage from the lounge room, no recordings of the assaults were retained.

The identity of the perpetrator has not been disclosed to the public, and it remains uncertain whether he had undergone a Working With Children Check, a mandatory screening process in Australia for those working with minors. Concerns also arise about the families of other children attending the daycare being informed about the case. Following the investigation, the Australian Department of Education took swift action by closing down the daycare and implementing a ban.
The man’s sentencing included 15 years and six months in prison, with a non-parole period of nine years and nine months. In addition, he is required to participate in a sex offender treatment program and will be registered as a sex offender for life. During the sentencing, a judge in Victoria condemned the man’s actions, describing them as “abhorrent” and highlighting the opportunistic nature of the offences committed in the absence of his wife.
In the wake of this harrowing incident, the victim’s mother expressed profound feelings of guilt and remorse, blaming herself for the trauma inflicted upon her child. The mother shared her anguish, stating that witnessing her daughter’s anxiety and fear has been an ongoing ordeal that feels insurmountable. She emphasised that the child’s experiences are deeply distressing and should never be part of a young person’s life.
