A school teacher in Puerto Rico is currently in custody after being accused of sex trafficking two underage children. Lizamarie Rivera-García, aged 42, was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges involving two minor boys, aged 15 and 17, on July 7. The religion teacher was promptly arrested on the same day by federal agents, as per a news release from the Department of Justice.

Rivera-García stands accused of committing a series of grave offences against these minors. The indictment asserts that she “knowingly and willfully recruited, enticed, transported, and maintained” the 15-year-old victim to partake in commercial sex acts between December 2023 and October 2024.

Furthermore, the indictment details allegations that Rivera-García engaged in coercive behaviour towards the 15-year-old, including employing him for sexual activity and using online platforms to transfer obscene material. Concurrently, between December 2023 and November 2024, she is accused of similar conduct towards the 17-year-old victim, involving the facilitation of commercial sex activities.
If proven guilty on all four accusations, Rivera-García faces a minimum sentence of 50 years, distributing among the charges of sex trafficking, transportation, and coercion. Homeland Security Investigations in San Juan spearheaded the case against Rivera-García, where the prosecution will be led by an assistant attorney from the Child Exploitation and Immigration Unit.
Rebecca C. Gonzalez-Ramos, the special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in San Juan, articulated shock and dismay at the allegations, stating, “A female religion teacher that had the responsibility to guiding our children about principles and beliefs was actually developing a plan to sexually assault them.”
U.S. Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico, W. Stephen Muldrow, emphasised the severity of the crimes at hand by stating, “The sexual exploitation of children robs children of their freedom, dignity and sense of security. Such conduct is unacceptable in our society.”
In light of these distressing events, it is essential to highlight the significance of safeguarding our youth from exploitation and abuse. Such cases serve as a stark reminder of the critical need for robust measures to protect vulnerable individuals within our communities.
It is imperative that educators and individuals in positions of trust are held to the highest standards of ethical conduct and accountability. The repercussions of breaching this trust, particularly in cases involving minors, can have devastating and lifelong impacts on the victims.
Efforts must be continued and intensified to raise awareness, implement preventive measures, and provide support for victims of exploitation. By fostering a culture of vigilance, transparency, and intervention, we can strive towards creating safer environments for our children and vulnerable members of society.
The gravity of the charges against Lizamarie Rivera-García serves as a stark warning about the imperative need for vigilance and enforcement in combating such heinous crimes. As the legal proceedings unfold, the focus must remain steadfast on seeking justice for the victims and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
In closing, it is crucial for communities and authorities to collaborate in safeguarding the welfare and rights of children, upholding the values of protection, respect, and support for those most in need. The pursuit of justice in such cases is not only a legal obligation but a moral imperative to uphold the basic human rights and dignity of every individual.
