The attack took place as Rothschild was descending the stairs at the Queens Plaza subway station. Blount, wielding a black cane, approached her from behind, kicked her down the stairs, and proceeded to strike her in the head 13 times with a hammer. After the vicious attack, he grabbed her tote bag and fled the scene, leaving Rothschild with severe injuries including skull fractures, a broken finger, and other wounds. The gravity of the assault shocked both authorities and the public.
Following the attack, Rothschild was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. She had to undergo surgery to address her skull fractures, which involved the replacement of damaged parts with titanium mesh. Investigators were able to identify Blount through surveillance footage that captured him with Rothschild’s tote bag as he left the subway station and made his way to a relative’s residence. Additionally, Blount’s DNA was discovered on the hammer used in the assault and on his black cane.

During the sentencing, Rothschild bravely delivered a victim impact statement directly addressing Blount. She questioned his motives, expressing confusion as to why he resorted to such a brutal attack instead of simply taking her belongings. The judge overseeing the case acknowledged the severity of the incident, highlighting that it was a miracle Rothschild survived the vicious assault. Blount was found guilty of multiple charges, including assault and robbery, and was handed a substantial prison term.
District Attorney Katz commended Rothschild for her courage in testifying against her assailant and facing him in court. The prosecution emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety of public transport systems and sending a clear message that such acts of violence will not be tolerated. The conviction of Blount serves as a warning to others who may contemplate causing harm while using public transportation, reinforcing the commitment to protecting commuters and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
Incidents like the attack on Nina Rothschild shed light on the importance of safety and vigilance, particularly in public spaces such as subway stations. The resilience shown by Rothschild in the face of such a traumatic event serves as a testament to the strength of survivors and the necessity of seeking justice in the aftermath of heinous crimes. As the sentencing brings a measure of closure to this harrowing chapter, the community remains united in support of victims of violence and in upholding the principles of justice and accountability.
