A shocking incident in Florida recently made headlines when a 29-year-old driver, Charles Wheeler II, was caught allegedly driving at a staggering speed of 115 miles per hour on the highway. What made the situation even more alarming was the fact that there was a baby in the backseat of the vehicle at the time. The driver was not only speeding but also engaging in reckless behaviour such as tailgating other drivers and using Snapchat while driving.

According to reports from NBC affiliate WBBH and ABC affiliate KESQ, the Florida Highway Patrol stopped Wheeler near the Harborview Road exit of I-75 in Charlotte County on June 22. He was subsequently arrested and charged with reckless driving and child neglect. Wheeler, hailing from Arcadia, was taken into custody and booked at the Charlotte County Jail. His bail was set at $3,500, with separate amounts allocated for the reckless driving and child neglect charges.

Following his arrest, it was reported that Wheeler was exhibiting concerning behaviour. Deputies claimed that he was weaving through traffic, tailgating other vehicles, and even blasting vulgar music from his phone. Additionally, a Snapchat video found on his phone showed a caption that read “Good Vibes Only” with a speedometer filter displaying a speed of 110 miles per hour. This further underscored the dangerous nature of his actions on the road that day.

The authorities also revealed that Wheeler narrowly avoided a potential crash while trying to dodge a mattress on the road. The presence of the baby in the backseat during such reckless driving raises serious concerns about the safety and well-being of the infant. It is truly a fortunate circumstance that no harm befell the child or other motorists due to Wheeler’s irresponsible behaviour behind the wheel.
As of now, there has been no information regarding a court date for Wheeler. The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office has not made any further details public about the case. Despite attempts to reach out for additional information, the Florida Highway Patrol did not immediately respond to requests from the media for more insight into the incident. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether Wheeler has obtained legal representation to address the charges brought against him.
Incidents like these serve as poignant reminders of the importance of responsible driving, particularly when vulnerable individuals such as children are involved. The safety of all road users should be a top priority for everyone behind the wheel. Hopefully, this incident will serve as a cautionary tale to prevent similar occurrences in the future. It is essential for drivers to adhere to speed limits, avoid distractions, and prioritise the safety of themselves and others while on the road.
