Three hikers who tragically lost their lives after jumping into a California waterfall have been identified. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the identities of the three men who died at Rattlesnake Falls on June 18. They are 44-year-old Matthew Anthony from New York, and two men from Los Angeles – 50-year-old Matthew Schoenecker and 59-year-old Valentino Creus.

The incident occurred when Schoenecker and Anthony bravely leaped into the water to assist Creus, who appeared to be struggling in the water. A diver named Juan Heredia shared that Schoenecker, a former high school diving champion, attempted to help Creus, who was experiencing distress and panic in the water. Anthony also joined in the rescue effort, but unfortunately, all three men succumbed and drowned in the swift waters of the waterfall.

Matt Meeks, a close friend of Creus for 15 years, affirmed the events leading to the tragedy in a heartfelt post on social media. Meeks fondly remembered Creus as a spiritual and compassionate individual who dedicated his time to mentoring and supporting others in various aspects of life. He described Creus as someone who lived his life fully, reflected in his final act of bravery to save his friends.
According to Meeks, the group of friends began their day with a religious ceremony before embarking on a hike in Royal Gorge. After reaching Rattlesnake Falls, known to Schoenecker, the group decided to cool off by jumping into the water. Unfortunately, the leisurely activity took a grave turn when Creus encountered difficulties, prompting Schoenecker and Anthony to intervene. The forceful current proved to be overwhelming, leading to the tragic outcome.
Rescue efforts were swiftly initiated by the Placer County Sheriffs Office upon receiving reports of the incident. Despite challenging wind and water conditions, the search and recovery teams persevered in locating the bodies of the three men. Heredia, the diver who discovered the victims, disclosed the locations where Anthony, Schoenecker, and Creus were found within the waterfall pool.
The community and authorities extend their deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased hikers, acknowledging the heartbreaking loss suffered by all those affected. The tragic event serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of outdoor adventures and the importance of safety measures when venturing into natural landscapes.
The untimely deaths of these three hikers have left a profound impact on their loved ones and the wider community. As the details of the incident unfold, it serves as a solemn tribute to the heroic actions of Schoenecker, Anthony, and Creus, who selflessly risked their lives to aid a friend in need. May their courage and friendship be remembered as a testament to the enduring bond shared by kindred spirits in the face of adversity and tragedy.
In conclusion, the enduring memory of these brave hikers will serve as a reminder of the inherent risks and rewards of exploring the great outdoors. Their legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and cherished them, offering solace and strength during this time of profound loss and reflection.
